• From the Telegraph – How the Dutch experiment with puberty blockers turned toxic:

The deliberations of the Dutch parliament rarely make waves in the UK, but a motion passed by its MPs last week may have a profound effect on the way the NHS treats children seeking gender reassignment.

In short, the Dutch government has been told to conduct research into the physical and mental health outcomes of children given puberty blockers, which tends to be the first step on the pathway to changing gender. Cross-sex hormone treatment and surgery often follow.

The reason this is such a big deal is that the Netherlands pioneered the use of puberty blockers, using guidelines known as the Dutch Protocol, which has been copied in the UK and around the world since it was first published by a clinic in Amsterdam in 1998.

The fact that the Dutch are now having doubts about a practice they effectively exported to the rest of the world has obvious implications, not least for the NHS….

Campaigners against the use of puberty blockers believe the Dutch parliament’s decision to order an investigation into them could represent a major turning point in what they refer to as the “Wild West” of gender dysphoria treatment.

“The house of cards has started to fall,” says Stephanie Davies-Arai, the director of Transgender Trend, a UK organisation which calls for evidence-based care for children with gender dysphoria. “Country by country, this whole area of healthcare has been examined and found wanting.

“It’s hugely significant for the UK because the Dutch Protocol was used as a kind of template for everybody else….

Critics of the Dutch Protocol have long complained that it was based on flawed research, that clinicians prescribe blockers as a way of pausing puberty when in fact they cause irreversible physical changes, and that data on their long-term effects is at best patchy and at worst shows that they cause more problems than they solve, including reduced bone density.

When the paediatrician Hilary Cass was asked to conduct an independent review of GIDS, she said in an interim report published in 2022 that the “unquestioning affirmative approach” to children who were unsure of their gender overshadowed the need to look into comorbidities, such as poor mental health.

In other words, children who may be struggling with physical changes to their bodies for all sorts of reasons are being given irreversible medical treatments when in many cases the real cause of their unhappiness may involve autism, depression, ADHD, anxiety or abuse.

With the power of social media now, though, you don't need anything more than an entirely normal apprehension, and the lack of confidence that comes with puberty – especially perhaps for young girls – to believe that puberty blockers might just be the answer. Your body changes; your social world changes, and it's all a bit scary. And these youngsters pick up on the latest trends, and the fashionable concerns that dominate the world they're immersed in. Perhaps they really were "born in the wrong body". Then, instead of letting puberty run its natural course, these unhappy teens are subject to serious and irreversible medical intervention – where the long-term effects, disgracefully, have never been properly researched. Puberty blockers are powerful drugs, and we know that their use will almost certainly lead on to hormone replacement therapy, and possibly to surgery.

Davies-Arai believes we are now at the beginning of the end of the widespread use of puberty blockers.

“At some point we will look back in horror at this, as we look back now on lobotomies,” she observes. “It might take a long time because this generation of children has been indoctrinated, but hopefully younger children will now be spared.”

  • A powerful article from Alvin H Rosenfeld at Tablet:

Hamas’s assault on Israelis on October 7th was not an act of war as we normally think of it but something far worse. We don’t have an adequate term for what occurred on that day, so people use words like “terrorism,” “barbarism,” “atrocity,” “depravity,” “massacre,” and so on. All are correct, and yet all fall short of capturing the annihilationist fury set loose at the Nova music festival and in the kibbutzim and small towns of southern Israel. The people attacked in those places were not only to die, but to die in torment. In addition to the merciless torture, killings, slashings, burnings, beheadings, mutilations, dismemberments, and kidnappings, there were gang-rapes and other forms of sadistic sexual assault, including, according to some reports, the cutting off of women’s breasts, nails driven into women’s thighs and groins, bullets fired into their vaginas, and even intercourse with female corpses. Unimaginable? For most normal people, yes. But before going into Israel, the Hamas assassins were instructed to “dirty them” and “whore them.” And that’s precisely what many of them faithfully did.

If it were possible to encapsulate all the evil of that day in a single image, it would be that of the violent seizure of a young Israeli woman, Naama Levy, 19, barefoot, beaten, and bloodied, her hands tied behind her back, the crotch of her sweatpants heavily soiled, possibly from being raped, dragged by her hair at gunpoint into a Hamas car, and driven off to Gaza to suffer an unspeakable fate among her captors there. Her assailants filmed every second of her ordeal; and as one watches the clips of her being taken away, one sees crowds nearby loudly shouting “Allah-hu Akbar” – “Allah is the greatest”—a victory cry that offers religious sanction to the malign treatment of Naama Levy and countless others seized, slaughtered, and abducted on that horrific day.

All wars cause human suffering, but the cruelties visited upon Israelis on October 7th far surpasses what normally happens when armies go to war. Hamas’s actions had a different aim: not conquest but the purposeful humiliation of Jews by people who detest them and were sworn to degrade and dehumanize them before murdering them.

Yet tens of thousands were out on the streets in western cities – London, New York, Sydney – loudly celebrating this astonishing barbarism. Those who thought that antisemitism in the West was firmly in the past were in for a very rude awakening.

Hamas originates as a branch of the Muslim Brotherhood. It is and always has been a jihadist organization, which sees the existence of the State of Israel as an intolerable intrusion into the Domain of Islam (“dar al-islam”) and is committed to removing Israel by whatever means necessary. The preamble to the Hamas Charter declares that “Israel exists and will continue to exist until Islam obliterates it, just as it obliterated others before it.” The “Palestinian problem,” it affirms, “is a religious problem” and is not amenable to a negotiated political settlement. The only way to “raise the banner of Allah over every inch of Palestine” is through “jihad,” a holy war that is a “duty for every Muslim wherever he may be.”

As represented by Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah, the Houthis in Yemen, and the Islamic Republic of Iran (the sponsor of all the others), it is also religious, and at its heart of hearts there resides an annihilationist fantasy of killing Jews and bringing an end to the Jewish state. Hamas and its allies are not looking for a two-state solution but a repeat of the Final Solution. Their brutally successful killing spree on October 7th was an extravagant rehearsal for that larger goal, a genocidal one….

The anti-Israel passions set loose in street demonstrations and on college campuses and social media have heightened already resurgent displays of open Jew-hatred and rattled a previously assumed sense of security. Academic scholars will continue to debate whether anti-Zionism and antisemitism are similar or separate phenomena, but to most others, the links between hatred of Israel and Jew-hatred are apparent. The reasons are clear: the widespread and unapologetic branding of Israel as an apartheid, genocidal, even Nazi state—defamatory accusations that were in wide circulation well before October 7th—are rapidly becoming normalized. The same is true for both verbal and physical hostility to Jews. As these impassioned animosities coalesce and go mainstream, Jews everywhere are experiencing an unease about their place in society that is new and unnerving for many of them….

Also evident is the following: There will be no Jewish future worthy the name without the State of Israel.

  • The latest on Ukraine, and Mike Johnson's (and Trump's) disastrous stalling, from historian Timothy Snyder – The apocalypse we choose:

In four months as Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson has given Russia a chance to win its war in Ukraine, and thereby turn the world towards tyranny.

Johnson's term of office consists of stratagems to avoid funding Ukraine.  He and a minority of Trumpist Republicans have left Ukrainians without the means to defend themselves, and enabled Russian aggressors to retake Ukrainian territory.  As a result, troops are killed and disabled every day. […]

For most of this century, democracy has been in decline, and this decline has been accompanied by a discourse of passivity and a lack of resolve. Russia's attack on Ukraine — the rare event of an armed autocracy seeking to destroy a peaceful democracy by military force — was a turning point in this history. Which way we will all turn remains to be seen. By resisting on the battlefield, Ukraine has, for the time being anyway, preserved its own democracy, and given new hope to democracies in general. There is nothing automatic about democracy. People have to believe that they should rule. And this will always involve some risk. By taking great risks for the right values, Ukrainians can and do encourage others around the world. If Ukrainians are killed, maimed, and forced to retreat as a result of U.S. policy, everyone is demoralized — including us.

If Americans let Ukrainians down, it will be a blow, perhaps a fatal one, to the "spirit of freedom," as a Ukrainian veteran put it in a speech I heard at the Munich Security Council. We need that spirit, in part to oppose those who lack it. The people who block aid for Ukraine today wish our own democracy ill. In the last few days and weeks we have witnessed, again and again, the overlap between Russian influence in American politics, opposition to aid to Ukraine, and hostility toward the American constitutional system. Putin knows that his only route to Kyiv passes through Washington, D.C., and he has acted accordingly.

The people working to assure the destruction of democracy in Ukraine also oppose democracy in America. We have just experienced a bogus impeachment proceeding against President Biden, where the chief accusation (long ago discredited by Ukrainian and other journalists, incidentally) arose from a Russian agent. Mike Johnson is in a submission chain that passes through Donald Trump to Vladimir Putin.

  • For little or no pay in government-assigned jobs, it's just not worth it:

As North Koreans face continuing economic hardship in the wake of the pandemic, more and more young people are skipping work. Employers are issuing stern warnings and even taking legal action in serious cases, but this only makes young people more defiant.

“The number of young people skipping work in Hyesan has more than doubled. While there used to be a few absentee workers at workplaces, there are now five or more on average,” a source in Yanggang Province told Daily NK on Feb. 29, speaking on condition of anonymity.

According to the source, absenteeism among young people in Hyesan has been on the rise recently. The source explained that many people have little motivation to show up for their government-assigned jobs, which often pay little or nothing, as the economic situation has not improved even after the pandemic.

At a cement factory in Hyesan, five young people missed more than ten days of work in February. The factory had representatives visit the homes of the young truants to assess the situation, but the factory has yet to come up with a concrete plan of action.

Ha! A "concrete plan of action". Cement factory?

    Oh never mind.

“A young man met the love of his life in 2022. They had just started living together because financial difficulties prevented them from getting married, and they had a child last November. But in their poverty, the mother couldn’t afford enough food to breastfeed properly, and the baby whimpered with hunger every day. So the young man has been skipping work while looking for other ways to earn some money,” the source said.

The factory manager who stopped by the young man’s home was shocked to see the family earning a living from a small patch of land they farmed near the city center. The manager felt sorry for the family and returned to the factory without taking any further action.

When seven young people skipped work at a construction company in Hyesan this month, three of the absentees were given disciplinary labor sentences.

“Although officials sternly warn young people that frequent absenteeism will result in legal punishment, and although several people have actually been sent to disciplinary labor camps, absenteeism isn’t decreasing. This shows that young people consider their livelihoods more important than their jobs,” the source said.

The source quoted a North Korean youth as saying, “We have seen with our own eyes that our parents remained loyal until they collapsed from hunger, but their efforts went unrewarded.”

“When we’re on the verge of starvation, what’s the point of being called a hero or getting some kind of medal?” said another.

“We can’t survive unless we pull ourselves up by our bootstraps. That’s why going to work is worse than death and feels like a kind of torture,” said a third young person.

“Young people who have suffered economically even after the end of the pandemic feel desperate about their future. If the authorities rely on legal measures to deal with this, young people’s distrust and antipathy towards the state will only increase in the future, which could have serious consequences,” the source said.

    Let's hope so.

  • Further to that last post about publishing Jewish authors…from the Telegraph:

Half of British publishers are refusing to take books by authors who are identifiably Jewish, a literary agent has claimed.

The major agent, who did not wish to be identified, said many mainstream publishing houses were among those deeming Jewish books as off bounds.

The agent was speaking to Stephen Games, who founded the independent publisher EnvelopeBooks, who said it has been an “emerging problem” for some time that has been “exacerbated” since the Israel-Gaza war began in October.

“A very well-known literary agent of great repute and associated with books that one would immediately recognise said that he is having difficulty with his Jewish authors or writings on Jewish subjects because he just finds that much of literary London is now a no-go zone for Jews,” said Mr Games.

“He said there is no point putting proposals up to commissioning editors as they just are not interested.”

Astonishing – and deeply depressing – if true.

Here's the book – Jews Milk Goats:

When Gill Freedman and her husband Jeremy decided to move to a smallholding in rural Bedfordshire many of their friends and family thought they were mad.

How could they leave behind the comforts of North London? What did they really know about raising chickens, sheep, cows and goats and growing fruit and vegetables? How would they cope with the mud, the wet and the cold? And how would they be able to observe their Jewish faith so far from the centres of Judaism in England?

  • From the Mail on Sunday:

One of the biggest girls' football leagues in the country faces being shut down by the Football Association for refusing to allow a boy to play in its matches.

The Mail on Sunday can reveal that a row has broken out between the FA and officials running a female league in Yorkshire after parents complained their son had not been allowed to join.

It is understood the FA has threatened the West Riding Girls Football League with sanctions and a possible suspension if it does not agree to let boys on the pitch, a scenario officials have branded 'a massive threat to the girls' game'.

Last week an emergency meeting was held by organisers of the league – which has at least 6,000 under-18 girls playing across more than 300 teams – where managers voiced their concerns that allowing boys to play would 'open the floodgates'.

The FA's gender policy states that any under-16 teams must allow both boys and girls to play, despite admitting that 'physical strength, stamina or physique' can put one sex at the disadvantage of the other.

At the end of October last year the boy's parents asked the West Riding Girls League if their son could join due to him not wanting to play with other boys, and also because of his ability level….

An email from the league's secretary to its members last week said: 'This is a massive threat to the girls game and we should be mindful that this could be a long struggle should we fight this head on.

To all intents and purposes we would not just be fighting for the integrity of our girls' league but all girls' leagues in the country.'

Furious team coaches pointed out there were mixed sex leagues the boy could join.

One female club manager said: 'We've spoken to parents and the girls themselves, a number of them we've 'rescued' from mixed sex leagues where they have been excluded from having the ball passed to them, where they have been tackled and had bones broken.

'I have also been informed by parents that they would be looking to take their daughters out of the league and the girls themselves saying they would just give it up if boys joined.'

A male coach said when he asked the girls on his team for their opinion on allowing boys to join they all said 'they wouldn't be happy and then four said they would give up playing football'.

He's not even claiming to be trans, this lad. He just wants to play with the girls because….well, because he's not very good, and thinks he'll do better with the girls. Nice for him, not so nice for the girls. It's sort of taking away the trans fig-leaf to make the power-play even clearer: women in sport don't really matter.

Why bother even having a female league, if boys/men can just join in when they feel like it?
