Camilla Long in today’s Sunday Times, on the Greens in the aftermath of the Holborn and St Pancras by-election:
To many people, this defeat is proof that the Green Party has now “peaked”. Phew: that was the immediate analysis. In fact, it has not peaked. It is just getting going. I’ve been watching it long enough to know that Polanski was the mere chrysalis. Soon we will see the full emergence of the Islamofascist moth.
You do not spend a whole year signing up thousands of this country’s most dedicated Jew haters only for them to go nowhere.
In the old days it was the far right, parties like the BNP, that scared us with their open racism. We’ve been looking the same way, to the right, ever since. We weren’t prepared for the first openly racist party for years in UK politics to emerge on the “progressive” left.
The BNP never managed to get 587 councillors elected, by the way. It never had full control of six whole councils. It never had two mayors, as the Greens have after May’s local elections. In fact, Nick Griffin is a total failure, last seen in court in April, denying posting antisemitic content. The number of Greens so far accused of similar? More than 30, but the same hasn’t happened to them.
