I assume that the obvious reply would be that no matter why people left a war zone, they should have had the right, after the war, to return. And the rejoinder that would be that they would not have been loyal to the new state.

There is no principle or right of a population, the considerable majority of whom immigrated to an area within the last twenty years, who initiate and lose a war of annihilation against a pre-existing population, to then return to that area which the majority of whom never had any legal claim to ownership of and no history in.
