The excuse of "causing harm" by airing different views is of course offensive nonsense. These people aren't children. The ridiculous conceit of "safe spaces" for easily offended sensitive students has spread from US campuses right across academia and beyond. As appropriated by the gender crowd, it's now basically an acknowledgement that their ideas can't stand up when challenged, so must be imposed by diktat.
