Arthur Rothstein - November 1939. "Former tiff miner, now blind, with son. Washington County, Missouri."

Tiff mines were crude holes in the ground, usually ten to fifteen feet deep. They were unique to Washington County, Missouri and it was, apparently, a dangerous and laborious business. Tiff was a form of white lead used in paint.
