John Gerrard's deeply moving structure in the courtyard of Somerset House – one of the defining artworks of our time – acts as a powerful metaphor for Western civilisation. Just a big black box of nothing:
Well no. It's actually meant to show a continuous film of his Western Flag (Spindletop, Texas) 2017 – "a live, real-time simulation of the landscape where a massive oil-strike gave birth to the modern world."
