Over 50% of Egyptian men suffer from erectile dysfunction, and can’t satisfy the sexual urges of uncircumcised women. That's the stated opinion of Egyptian MP Elhamy Agina, and the reason why he supports female genital mutilation (FGM). Here he's taken to task by TV host Tamer Amin - not, of course, for his support of FGM, but for the aspersions cast on the honour of Egyptian men, “the most manly men in the whole world":

Naturally the outrageous defence of FGM, which unwittingly gets straight to the heart of the matter – that women should be sexually mutilated in their infancy so that the men don't get to feel inadequate – gets lost somewhere in the discussion, as the boys squabble over their manliness, and the manliness of Egyptian men in general.

More from the Times [£]:

Women in Egypt must be circumcised to “reduce their sexual desires” and match that of the country’s “sexually weak” men, an Egyptian MP has said days after the cabinet toughened penalties for those who perform the illegal operation.

Elhamy Agina, who represents Dakahlia Governorate, said that female genital mutilation (FGM) was the only way that men and women could be equal.

“We are a population whose men suffer from sexual weakness, which is evident because Egypt is among the biggest consumers of sexual stimulants,” he said, according to Parlmany, the parliament’s semi-official news outlet. “If we stopped circumcising we will need strong men, and we don’t have those.”

Nearly 90 per cent of Egyptian women between the ages of 15 and 49 have been cut even though the operation has been illegal since 2008.

People pay doctors, nurses or midwives as little as £5.50 for the operation which removes part or all of the clitoris, believing it to preserve the virtue of a girl by controlling her sexual appetite.

There’s always an appeal to scientific authority in these things isn’t there? Whether it’s Muslims discovering Cuba, flies dipped in drink on each wing to clean water, women being unable to drive or Jews being descended from apes – they always cite some study or other. Are there real universities of batshit crazy studies where they get this shit from
    Or are they lying?

Without doing extensive research on the matter, I’d say that much of the time they’re just making it up.
