This Sunday I’m leading a cycle ride up the Lea Valley to Waltham Abbey Woods, and possibly Nazeing. Meeting 10:00 at Cutty Sark Gardens in Greenwich.

Last time I was down there – which admittedly was in the summer – both lifts on the Greenwich foot tunnel were out of action. Your riders are in danger of being knackered before they start, lugging bikes up and down all those steps.

There has been mismanagement of the Greenwich and Woolwich Foot Tunnels renovation program, and, a couple of weeks ago, Greenwich Council finally saw fit to sack the lead contractor. This is what happens when local authorities fund infrastructure projects from central government and lottery grants. There is little or no accountability, and extended delays are the norm.
Yes, cyclists have to haul their bikes down and up ~100 steps at each of of the tunnel, and this with the stairwells constricted to a wide of just a metre in places. This state of affairs will no doubt continue until just before the Olympics in the summer.LikeLike
