From a 1930 stop-motion animation film by Charley Bowers (via):

Unsurprisingly, Andre Breton was a fan. Though I don't recall too many laughs in the Surrealist Manifesto.

Bowers' 1928 comedy short There It Is features Charley MacNeesha, a Scotland Yard detective (with kilt and bagpipes) who investigates the Case of the Fuzz-Faced Phantom, along with his insect sidekick. Gloriously weird. On YouTube here.

More of that kind of thing from Mr Bowers: Wild Oysters, Believe it or Don’t, and Pete Roleum and His Cousins.

Thanks for that! – though the Wild Oysters doesn’t play anymore, sadly.

Curses! Found another copy, but it’s a bit blurry.
