aka Dinah Washington, aka the Queen of the Blues. Maybe my favourite of all those great women jazz/blues singers. Possibly Bob Dylan's favourite too: she was the most played artist, along with Tom Waits at ten songs apiece, on his Theme Time Radio Hour show. From 1959, towards the end of her career (she died in 1963, only 39 years old).
It's not just the voice and the timing: she also was a fabulous performer. Though of course just her voice can be enough: this is wonderful. Or, especially, this.
