A powerfully understated performance from Joe Tex:

From 1966.

A James Brown rival in his day, with some fine singles from the Sixties – Hold On What You've Got is great, even if the lyrics about the little woman staying at home to mind the children and prepare her man's dinner don't come across too well today. Also produced one of the more regrettable efforts of the late Seventies Disco boom, Aint Gonna Bump No More  (With No Big Fat Woman) (remember when all those songs had bracketed add-ons at the end?).

Converted to Islam and died in 1982 just after his 49th birthday. Oh well.

by the late 70s he was still powerful, but hardly understated.
