• David Rose at UnHerd:

University College London has issued an “unequivocal apology” following a lecture hosted by the institution’s Justice in Palestine Society which uncritically referred to a 19th century antisemitic blood libel. The lecture on the history of Zionism, given by a “former fixed-term researcher” at UCL, Dr Samar Maqusi — whose profile on the website has since been removed — mentioned the 1840 Damascus Affair, when Jews were accused without evidence of murdering a priest to make bread with his blood.

She wasn’t exactly saying the blood libel was true – was fact, as Nicole Lampert’s tweet suggests – but then again she wasn’t saying it wasn’t true.

In the lecture, Maqusi mentioned that “part of the holy ceremony is that drops of blood from someone who’s not Jewish [
] has to be mixed in that bread”. “He was found murdered, and a group of Jews who lived in Syria admitted to kidnapping him and murdering him to get the drops of blood for making the holy bread.”

While Maqusi did caveat the story by saying “do investigate, draw your own narrative”, she failed to mention that the Jews who admitted to the crime did so after being tortured. She also failed to mention that 63 Jewish children were taken from their parents in an effort to make them reveal where the “blood” was being stored. She said nothing to suggest that perhaps the Jews’ confessions might have been unreliable or a result of coercion.

    And that wasn’t all.

According to Maqusi, “the Jews pretty much controlled the [world’s] financialisation [sic] structure”. In her view, “a lot of the banks, a lot of the financial infrastructure, was owned by a lot of Jewish families”. It was this, she went on, that persuaded Napoleon Bonaparte to “erect the Jewish kingdom in Palestine under French patronage”. He was helped by “a man called Sir Moses Montefiore”, she said. “He’s a British financier and banker, activist and philanthropist, and he was the Sheriff of London, so we can also start making connections between, um, Britain, and the wealthy Jewish leaders of Britain, who now enters our story.” Critics have noted that Napoleon did not establish the Jewish state, which did not come into existence until 1948, 127 years after his death.

A minor detail. But then facts don’t count for much when you’re fired up with that “Justice in Palestine” zeal.

Two lessons from this. One, Western academia is in far worse shape than even its loudest critics allege. This is not about bias or “wokeness” in the classroom; it is about the shattering of intellectual pursuit in America, in Britain, and elsewhere. It is a de-enlightenment.

Two, the Damascus Affair was a major moment in the history of the American Jewish community, which organized multiple protests and turned itself into the shield of the Diaspora. President Martin Van Buren himself intervened, having his secretary of state decry “such barbarous measures” still happening in the world.

Once upon a time Americans believed that the Damascus Affair was more proof of the value of Western Civilization and the rights and norms that came along with it. Western Civilization was the solution, so it was thought, to the persistence of medieval brain rot into the modern era. And now Western educational institutions are the carriers of that brain rot.

    Yesterday I walked round it.

  • From Jewish News, the dark side of an animal rights group:

An animal rights group that claims to fight cruelty to pigs is spreading vile antisemitic conspiracy theories – blaming “Zionists” for the Holocaust, 9/11 and the war in Ukraine – while boasting celebrity backers, Jewish News can reveal.

Farms Not Factories, which campaigns for consumers to only buy local, high welfare and ethically produced pork, lists celebrities including Hugh Grant, former Channel 4 TV presenter Jon Snow and Game of Thrones actor Jerome Flynn on its “high profile supporters” page.

However, the organisation also publishes what it describes as “newsletters”, tens of thousands of words long, which quote copiously from a variety of deeply unpleasant sources pontificating about Jews, Israel and the Shoah, as well as promoting anti-vaccination and anti-Ukraine themes.

The newsletters tend to begin with the line, “The purpose of our newsletter is to give you important information that is censored in the mainstream media.” While much of the newsletters are made up of quotes from different sources, the newsletter itself will also introduce topics with its own wording. Examples of the latter, from newsletters over the last few months, include:

    • “In the 1930s the Rothschild-Rockefeller alliance introduced music frequency science that would alter people’s mental state into disruption, disharmony and disunity to brainwash them to be ready to fight in World War II”
    • “Watch a banker explain how during WWl the German and US Central banks were run by two Zionist brothers.”
    • “Murdering non-jewish children is allowed in the Talmud”
    • “Charlie Kirk’s words that helped get him killed by the zionists”
    • “Zionists are liars, thieves and murderers in their pursuit of world domination”
    • “The proxy war in Ukraine is to steal Russia’s resources and bleed them of their power to intervene in the West and zionist geopolitical games.”

    Oh boy.

  • “If he’s a refugee then isn’t every single Jew alive a refugee?,” Rettig Gur poses.

Einat Wilf – former Israeli MK, author and intellectual – responds, unpacking how the Palestinian leadership turned a temporary refugee mechanism into a permanent political weapon – and why that decision keeps the conflict alive to this day.

  • It seems that Hitler was, in fact, more like Göring, or Himmler. From the Times:

In May 1945, Allied soldiers wandered through Adolf Hitler’s FĂŒhrerbunker in grim fascination, but one of them spotted a macabre opportunity.

Colonel Roswell P Rosengren of the US army, one of General Eisenhower’s press officers, fixed his eye on the sofa where the Nazi dictator had taken his own life.

He cut a piece of the blood-stained cloth and carried it home.

Eighty years on, that grisly memento has allowed scientists to do something extraordinary: they have sequenced Hitler’s DNA.

    And…

The research is due to be published in a scientific journal, but the key finding is this: Hitler had Kallmann syndrome, a genetic disorder that hinders the normal progression of puberty and the development of sexual organs.

Apparently Kallmann syndrome typically leads to a lack of testicle development in men.

  • From the Daily NK:

North Korea has been focusing on ideological indoctrination to teach the public that it is a completely independent nation â€” not an incomplete, divided nation — in accordance with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s “two hostile states” doctrine.

A Daily NK source in North Hamgyong province said recently that the Central Committee’s publicity and information department has been striving to indoctrinate the entire public, including party officials, so that they understand North Korea is one completely independent nation, distributing study material titled “Our Republic is a One Complete National System” on Oct. 17.

According to the source, the party committee of North Hamgyong province called for a complete cessation of outdated pro-unification indoctrination activities, stressing that Kim Jong Un said national unification is no longer a task for the age and that North Korea itself is a complete national system, based on the study materials….

In particular, the provincial party committee said contemporary indoctrination efforts must focus on establishing an ideological system centered solely on “our republic” so that people stop viewing the South as a subject of competition or comparison.

A telling detail. Any comparison with South Korea – a cultural and economic powerhouse – would not be welcome in Pyongyang. Decades ago, when Great Leader Kim Il Sung laid such weight on unification, it was always on the not-unrealistic understanding that the South would submit to the superior power of the North. Those days are long past.

Moreover, the provincial party committee noted that if people are to naturally internalize the idea that the North and South are two different countries, the role of propaganda and security officials is important.

Propaganda officials were ordered to take the lead in producing slogans, songs and propaganda materials to instill the idea that “our republic is one, complete nation” and everything must be organized in a way that glorifies not only the lifestyle and development of the “independent state” but also the leadership of Kim Jong Un, the source said.

Security officials were told to prevent impure thoughts from budding and taking root by completely blocking the spread of outside information, especially South Korean videos and rumors regarding the South, the source said.

Surely by now the idea of Korean unification, along the lines of East and West Germany, is dead in the water. The North doesn’t want it, and while the South still pays lip service, the feeling in the general population seems to be indifference at best. Why bother? It would be horrendously expensive, even before Chinese and Russian influence is taken into consideration.

  • From the JC:

A Conservative MP and former treasurer of the prestigious Oxford Union debating society has condemned the union for positing a motion that presents Israel as a greater threat than Iran to stability in the Middle East.

Greg Stafford, the MP for Farnham and Bordon, which covers parts of Surrey and Hampshire, also hit out at one of the guests speaking in favour of the motion, former Palestinian prime minister Mohammad Shtayyeh, for “cheerleading for Iran at a time when the region desperately needs moderate Palestinian voices”.

Speakers at the debate, which is due to take place tomorrow evening, will consider the motion “This house believes that Israel is a greater threat to regional stability than Iran.”

Shtayyeh, who stepped down as prime minister last year after five years in office, will be joined by Norman Finkelstein, a Jewish American political scientist who has labelled Israel a “Jewish supremacist state”; former Iranian government official Ata’ollah Mohajerani; and Rania Khalek, a journalist who has written for Russia Today and has been accused of repeating the Assad regime’s propaganda.

The Oxford Union has history here. Just a year ago:

Prominent pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian speakers gathered at the Oxford Union yesterday evening to debate whether or not “Israel is an apartheid state responsible for the genocide” of Palestinians, as hundreds of protesters were said to have congregated outside.

The debate at England’s Oxford University was held under tight security and ended with the union voting 278:59 in favor of the proposition that Israel is an apartheid state that is committing genocide.

The debate devolved into a shouting match between the speakers and the audience at one point, and Haddad was removed from the stage after a verbal altercation with attendees.

In a post on X following the debate, Yousef accuses the Oxford Union of being “controlled by terrorist supporters.”

“Last night I asked the participants and pro ‘Palestine’ opponents during a debate at Oxford Union if they would have reported Hamas plans to authorities to prevent October 7 massacre,” he writes. “75% of the participants voted they would have chosen not to report Hamas plans to the authorities.”

Jonathan Sacerdoti wrote about the event in the Spectator. “Deeply and worryingly dishonest, aggressive and one-sided”.

And Norman Finkelstein again – the man who wrote about The Holocaust Industry, and believes that Holocaust denial should be taught in university “and preferably by a Holocaust denier.”

From a 2012 interview with the great man: “I had been a Maoist, and then when the Gang of Four was overthrown I was completely distraught. I was bedridden for three weeks, it was a very painful experience for me. Not only because I had been wrong, but because I felt really embarrassed that I had been lecturing and pontificating with such self-confidence.” So he’s learnt absolutely nothing. From one set of hard-left crank beliefs straight to another.

  • “After several back&forth convos, his producers absolutely refused to let me have a reply to mermaids- so I said I wouldn’t go on at all. This unanswered coverage went on regularly. The bbc staff were complicit in this censorship. It was not an ‘outside plot’ it was bbc staff activism (not all of them Of course!)”

Susan Evans, a psychotherapist, was one of the original whistleblowers at the Tavistock. Someone worth talking to, then? Not for the BBC.
