• Relations between the two Koreas, never good, are going through one of their periodic lows. South Korea president Yoon Suk-yeol is a hard-line conservative who is not willing, as so many of his predecessors have been, to try the friendly appeasement approach. It never worked, anyway. So when North Korea blew up a couple of its own roads close to the border the other day – a gesture, presumably, intended to underline the South's recently declared position that reunification can never happen and the South is and shall remain enemy number one – the South Korean armed forces responded not with a shrug but with "counter-fire”. And in response to the balloons coming over from the North, full of everything up to and including shit, and interfering with flights in and out of Incheon airport, the South have decided to resurrect the old tactic of dropping propaganda leaflets, but, as Richard Lloyd Parry reports in the Times, with a technological upgrade:

Now, the South has responded with a new and unprecedented “grey zone” attack — drones that have successfully flown 160 miles to Pyongyang and back, dropping propaganda leaflets. The drones have provoked rage, even by the high standards of fury upheld by the Kim regime.

Kim’s sister, and right-hand woman, Kim Yo-jong, promised that “the moment that [another] drone … is discovered in the sky over our capital city again, there will certainly be a horrible disaster,” explaining that this will involve “destroying Seoul and the [South Korean] military force”.

Chilling words – if it wasn't par for the course from Kim's grim-faced attack-dog sister, who has a long record of unbalanced invective against the South – "no more than a running wild dog on a bone given by the U.S" or “South Korea should discipline itself if it wants to stave off disaster.”

In Pyongyang itself, as the Daily NK reports, the authorities are alarmed, but the people, it seems, not so much:

North Korea put Pyongyang on emergency alert after claiming that South Korea sent drones into the country on Oct. 11. The order came immediately after North Korea’s foreign ministry issued a “decisive statement” through state media, according to a source in Pyongyang.

The statement accused South Korea of sending drones to drop propaganda leaflets over Pyongyang, including near the leadership headquarters, and ordered organizations to be on high alert. Calling it a grave provocation aimed at the country’s core, the government ordered the military and civil defense forces to prepare for combat to defend Pyongyang with their lives.

Factory security guards and civil defense forces, including units of the Worker-Peasant Red Guards, at every organization and enterprise in Pyongyang, including small businesses, have been conducting emergency mobilization drills since Oct. 11, the source said.

“The drills are scheduled to last for 10 days, but it was mentioned beforehand that the drills could be extended if necessary,” the source said.

In addition, the authorities said that all citizens of Pyongyang should remain vigilant in their daily lives and that if they come across any leaflets or other suspicious items, they should not touch or look at them, but should immediately inform the authorities at their local state security department, police station, neighborhood watch unit or neighborhood government office….

According to the source, residents of the capital pay little attention to North Korea’s periodic denunciations of the South. They briefly take note of the latest comments and then go about their normal routines.

“The government is trying to reinforce the ideological conformity of the people by responding harshly and creating a sober atmosphere. But in private conversations with friends and family, Pyongyang’s citizens note that South Korea must have really made a lot of progress if it’s sending unmanned aircraft all the way to Pyongyang,” the source said.

  • More on the uselessness of UNIFIL [United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon], tasked with preventing the militarisation of southern Lebanon under Hezbollah, failing completely, and now, it seems, largely concerned with preventing Israel from doing the job. Shoshana Bryan at the Jewish News Syndicate:

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin is a decorated retired Army officer. He was supportive of Israel’s foray into Lebanon in the beginning. It would have been hard for him not to be, as Israel delivered justice for hundreds of U.S. and Allied military personnel murdered by Hezbollah in Lebanon and elsewhere. But his Oct. 12 phone call with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant pivoted into this:

“The secretary strongly emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and security of [United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon] UNIFIL forces and Lebanese Armed Forces and reinforced the need to pivot from military operations in Lebanon to a diplomatic pathway as soon as feasible. Sec. Austin also raised the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza and stressed that steps must be taken to address it.”

There is a lot that remains troubling in those two sentences.

Israel seeks no conflict with either UNIFIL or the LAF. If they get out of the way, they will have no problem. The Israel Defense Forces is destroying Hezbollah’s vast arsenal in Southern Lebanon, doing the job that had been entrusted to both UNIFIL and the LAF, largely at the U.S. taxpayer’s expense. Between 2006 and 2022, according to the U.S. State Department, the LAF received more than $3 billion in U.S. funding. For UNIFIL, the United States pays about 25% of the tab (the United Nations wanted 26.94%, but Congress capped it). In 2023, the assessment was $143 million. But despite the infusion, both organizations failed in their stated mission, either out of fear or out of commonality with an internationally labeled terror organization.

The “dire humanitarian situation” in northern Gaza is a function of Hamas stealing aid which it sells at enormous profit (watch the video here or see @Imshin on X). Is Austin proposing Israel return to northern Gaza and carry out police functions against Hamas to protect the shipments? And what happened to the U.S.-built Gaza pier, the floating disaster that cost either $320 million or $230 million, depending on which Department of Defense report you read? Either seems a bit much for a four-month boondoggle that was canceled in July.

There are times when negotiations with the enemy are simply not possible. Bryan cites Nazi Germany as one such enemy. Putin, I'd suggest, is another. And from Israel's point of view Iran and its proxies, which seek nothing less than Israel's annihilation, are in the same league.

Negotiations work best when the parties agree on an endgame and discuss, even acrimoniously, how to get there. Israel seeks security for its people; the removal of the military and political power of Hamas and now Hezbollah as well; and the return of the hostages. As long as Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah and friends believe the endgame is the destruction of Israel, their surrender is necessary.

There was nothing then and there is nothing now to negotiate with evil.

"And because divorce is nearly impossible in some cases, the woman may be raped constantly by her own husband under the regime’s supervision. This barbarism can’t be ignored."

  • From last month:

    https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

    And now:

Female inmates at the women’s prison in Shakopee, Minnesota have come forward to report disturbing behavior from the trans-identified males housed at their facility. Former inmate Rebeca Warmbo alerted Reduxx to the situation and has been communicating with women inside Shakopee, who reveal the male transfers are making them feel “unsafe” and “scared” for their lives.

“I have been able to speak to numerous women inside the prison and there is a significant increase in fear and anxiety. They have told me about being harassed, intimidated, and even sexually harassed,” Warmbo told Reduxx in an exclusive interview….

One inmate whom Warmbo has been in touch with sent a handwritten letter expressing that the men in the prison have caused her to be “scared, uncomfortable, and unsafe.” She also says the presence of the males in close quarters have been triggering her PTSD.

“I feel like there are some here not for the right reasons. They are having sex in bathrooms, [we are] finding cum in bottles, and people are touching themselves under the table,” the note reads. “I really wish legislation would take this [seriously] and change this.”

So why are violent men allowed in women's prisons? Well…

The prison policy was altered following a June 2022 lawsuit against the Minnesota Department of Corrections which ultimately resulted in the implementation of measures permitting male convicts to be housed in the female estate.

The discrimination claim was filed by the trans activist non-profit organization Gender Justice on behalf of Craig ‘Christina’ Lusk, who was serving a five-year sentence for the possession of methamphetamine at the Moose Lake correctional facility for men. In order to aid their legal fight to have violent men placed into the women’s prison, Gender Justice was granted nearly $500,000 in taxpayer funds from the administration of Governor Tim Walz.

Tim Walz? That nice Tim Walz? Isn't he, um, Kemala Harris's prospective vice president?

Lusk was arrested on two drug-related felonies, but was ultimately only convicted on one after striking a plea deal. He pleaded guilty to first degree possession of a controlled substance, and was sentenced to 98 months in prison. Lusk had also had a previous felony conviction for first-degree robbery. The defendant fact sheet lists Lusk’s gender as “male,” though he had changed his legal name the year prior.

“I was uneasy when Lusk lived on my wing because [he] still had [his] male anatomy, was built like a line backer, had a horrible temper, and would verbalize that [he] ‘still had a working unit,'” one woman, known as Janice, told Reduxx. “Thankfully [he] was discharged this past year.”

Upon his release, Lusk was awarded a $495,000 payout.

But Lusk’s ex-wife came forward last year to tell The Daily Mail that she believed he was a “scammer” and a “big fat liar.”

The two were married in 2005, but Lusk’s wife filed for divorce in 2008 due to his heavy drinking and violent behavior.

“He would tell his family that if he was a woman, and had boobs, then they had to put him in a female prison,” said Lusk’s ex-wife, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

“He said that he was going to make sure he made money out of the whole ordeal, he said ‘I’m going to become a woman and complain to make sure they give me money and move me,’” she added. “When we were married he wasn’t doing anything like that, or even after we were divorced. I think he’s a big fat liar.”

It's a scam. Of course it's a scam. Women suffer, but it's all worth it in the name of being seen to be "progressive" on gender issues.

  • The rot has spread to the Samaritans. From the Telegraph:

A Samaritans volunteer was suspended after he publicly called on the charity to sever its ties with a radical trans activist group.

Robert Laverick, a listening volunteer at Samaritans in Leeds, posted online that the suicide prevention charity should end its endorsement of Gendered Intelligence.

The controversial group, with contentious views on sex and gender identity in young people, is one of the charities Samaritans recommends on its website.

Following a disciplinary investigation by Samaritans, Mr Laverick, an academic at the University of Leeds, was found to have breached multiple guidelines with his post.

The 32-year old was given a written warning and ordered to undergo equality training, while Gendered Intelligence continues to be endorsed on the Samaritans website.

“They [Samaritans] have missed the point,” Mr Laverick told The Telegraph. “It’s all well and good to punish me, but that doesn’t change why I made the post.”

Mr Laverick started volunteering a year ago at Samaritans, which provides a helpline service for people in emotional distress or at risk of suicide.

In July, he posted on X, formerly Twitter, about an independent review by Prof Louis Appleby, a suicide expert. The review debunked trans activists’ claims that the ban on puberty blocker drugs, brought in by the previous government in May, will increase child suicides.

In the post, Mr Laverick wrote: “As a Samaritan listening volunteer, will the charity stand with Prof Appleby and condemn the false and irresponsible suicide claims around those whom are questioning their gender and reconsider our signposting list to remove harmful groups?”

In a later post, he called Gendered Intelligence an example of a “harmful group”.

Gendered Intelligence has caused controversy by giving seminars in schools to children as young as four on changing gender.

The charity says it exists to “increase understanding of gender diversity”, but parents’ groups have expressed concern that young children will become confused and could misinterpret feelings of unhappiness as a symptom of being the “wrong” gender….

Maya Forstater, chief executive of human rights charity Sex Matters, said: “Professor Appleby’s report for the Government was blistering on the dangers of misrepresenting suicide statistics in the context of trans activism.

“Organisations like the Samaritans should be taking it on board, not reprimanding volunteers for sharing it publicly.”

From Samaritans Media Guidelines for Reporting Suicide:

Steer clear of presenting suicidal behaviour as an understandable response to a crisis or adversity. This can contribute to unhelpful and risky normalising of suicide as an appropriate response to distress.

    Hmm.

“The United Nations peacekeeping force known as Unifil had one job: Keep armed terrorists out of southern Lebanon, where they could shoot at Israel. It failed so abysmally that Israel has had to go to war to clear out the terrorists. So what does Unifil do now? It refuses to fight, refuses to move, and blames Israel for putting its non-peacekeepers at risk.”

That last one, "Believed to have been originally owned by influential and controversial filmmaker, D.W. Griffith".

  • The news of civilian deaths in Gaza, and now in Lebanon, is tragic. Yet somehow there's an obsession with child deaths caused by Israeli bombing. Is this a resurfacing of old antisemitic tropes? Howard Jacabson had a piece in the Observer on Sunday:

It says something for the conscience of the Church of England that, in 1955, it put up a plaque alongside the former shrine of Little Hugh in Lincoln Cathedral, apologising for the harm it had done by falsely accusing Jews of the ritual slaughter of the boy in 1255.

That Jews habitually murdered gentile children for blood with which to make Passover matzoh, was a popular superstition throughout Britain and Europe in the middle ages. “These fictions cost many innocent Jews their lives,” the plaque reads, “[and] do not redound to the credit of Christendom, and so we pray: Lord, forgive what we have been, amend what we are, and direct what we shall be.”

That it took the Church of England 700 years to amend “what [it] had been” should not detract from the honesty of that amendment, particularly if we remember that the “blood libel”, as it has become known, was still alive and kicking in the modern era, with occurrences of it recorded in Russia and even America as recently as 1928….

Hence the hurt, the anger and the fear that Jewish people have been experiencing in the year since Hamas’s barbaric massacre of Israelis on 7 October and the no less barbaric denials, not to mention celebrations of it, as night after night our televisions have told the story of the war in Gaza through the death of Palestinian children. Night after night, a recital of the numbers dead. Night after night, the unbearable footage of their parents’ agony. The savagery of war. The savagery of the Israeli onslaught. But for many, writing or marching against Israeli action, the savagery of the Jews as told for hundreds of years in literature and art and church sermons.

Here we were again, the same merciless infanticides inscribed in the imaginations of medieval Christians. Only this time, instead of operating on the midnight streets of Lincoln and Norwich, they target Palestinian schools, the paediatric wards of hospitals, the tiny fragile bodies of children themselves. Even when there are other explanations for the devastation, no one really believes them. Reporters whose reports are proved wrong see no reason to apologise. No amendment of their calumnies. What is there to apologise for? It could have been true.

Ask how Israel is able to target innocent children with such deadly accuracy and no one can tell you. Ask why they would want to target innocent children and make themselves despised among the nations of the Earth and no one can tell you that either. Hate on this scale seeks no rational explanation. Hate feeds off the superstitions that fed it last time round. The narrative of these events requires a heartless villainy and who more heartlessly villainous than those who severed the arteries of Little Hugh of Lincoln?

Brendan O'Neill in the Spectator today:

Children in Gaza are dying in this ghastly war Hamas started with its fascistic pogrom against the Jewish state on 7 October last year. Yet there’s something new and strange in the discussion of child suffering in Gaza. In this war, the agony of the guiltless ones is not seen as accidental, as an awful byproduct of the fierce fighting. No, it’s seen as intentional, calculated, an actual war aim of the Jewish nation. Israel, its legion haters cry, is an infanticidal regime.

This is the first war I can remember where there’s been such a feverish urge to prove that kids are not just dying but are being murdered. Israel is ‘targeting childhood’, its critics insist. Peruse the Israelophobic toilet of social media and you will be confronted by wild cries about Israel exterminating the next generation of Gazans. ‘Infanticide’ is ‘inherent in Israel’s genocide’, some say. Leftie podcasts bristle with dark chatter about Israel’s bloodlust for innocent life.

This view of the Jewish state as a child-killing machine has even leaked into the mainstream discourse. A high-ranking UNICEF official described Israel’s war as a ‘war on children’. ‘They shoot children, don’t they?’, said a headline in Ireland recently.

Even pre-7 October, Israel was talked about as a nation that positively relishes in child death. In July 2023, in an interview with the former Israeli prime minister Naftali Bennett, a BBC news anchor put it to him that ‘Israeli forces are happy to kill children’. Happy. These freaks get a kick from child suffering. The BBC later apologised, but it was too late – the ugly dinner-party belief that Israel loves to kill kids had seeped into public view….

Is it anti-semitic to point out that children have died in Gaza? Of course not. Is it anti-semitic to say the Jewish State, unique among the family of nations, hunts kids down so that it might spill their blood and exterminate their kind? It kind of is. Let’s put it another way. Is it anti-semitic to criticise Israel? No. Is it anti-semitic to feverishly obsess over Israel, to brand it as uniquely murderous, to judge it by a different standard to every other state, and to hint darkly that it is sacrificing Gazan children at the altar of its demented regional ambitions? Honestly – yes.
