• We haven't heard of the drug problem in North Korea – methamphetamine, mainly – for a while now: last July, and herehere, here previously. Still a major problem though, as the Daily NK reports:

Despite heightened crackdowns and stricter punishments following new anti-narcotics legislation, drug abuse remains widespread in North Korea, particularly among officials. A source in Kangwon province reported that an increasing number of officials from powerful agencies, including local party committees and security ministries, are both using and distributing methamphetamines and opium for profit.

Officials are becoming entangled in drug deals both to secure their own supply and because dealers deliberately target them for protection, with some officials even promoting drug use at social gatherings….

Since officials from provincial trading companies and individual agencies have engaged in relatively brisk trading activities since Kim Jong Un’s  “20×10 regional development policy” was launched early this year, attempts to use this opportunity to smuggle North Korean drugs to China are growing, the source said.

The problem is that with officials deeply enmeshed in the drug trade, North Korea’s anti-drug crime law has been rendered ineffective.

In 2021, the 15th plenary meeting of the Standing Committee of the 14th Supreme People’s Assembly enacted an anti-drug law that stipulated a maximum penalty of death for illegally gathering, manufacturing or smuggling drugs.

“The reason the drug problem only gets worse is that the people buying drugs are officials,” the source said. “Even the central government is aware that drug addiction is growing more serious, but can’t do a thing about it.”

Drugs are such a severe problem in North Korea that even high school students ingest them.

  • Danny Cohen in the Telegraph – ‘Jew hunts’ are returning to the streets of Europe:

We now know more details of what took place in Holland and the planning that went into it. The messaging apps Telegram and WhatsApp were used by pro-Palestinian men to organise a “Jew hunt” or “Jodenjacht” in the city.

The attacks were well-organised, with taxi drivers responding to calls to mobilise and help identify the whereabouts of Jews.

One message in a WhatsApp group called “Community Centre” thanked a member of the chat in Arabic for providing information about the movements of Jews, commenting further in Dutch “bro your tip was worth gold”. Ugly, racist violence followed. Jews were beaten, kicked and humiliated on the streets of a major European city.

It would be some solace to believe that these horrific events in Amsterdam were an isolated incident, but this is not the case. Accounts of violent racism against Jews have appeared across Europe over the past few days.

In Germany, a group of Jewish schoolchildren were attacked by a pro-Palestinian mob armed with knives and sticks. The teenagers from Makkabi Berlin’s youth football team said they were “hunted down” by a gang of Arab youths after a match. The attackers shouted “Free Palestine” and “F— Jews” before threatening them with weapons.

It is a painful irony that the club these children play for was set up in the 1970s by Holocaust survivors as the capital’s first Jewish sports’ club since the end of the Third Reich.

In Belgium, police arrested five men as part of a pro-active effort to stop a suspected “Jew hunt”. Snapchat accounts were used by local men seeking to organise attacks on Jews. Their plan was to target Antwerp’s Jewish quarter. We must be grateful to police in the city for their timely intervention which disrupted another outbreak of anti-Semitic violence in Europe.

The use of the phrase “Jew hunt” to target Jews is particularly disturbing, with its echoes of the most traumatic and deadly period in Jewish history.

It has been used by historians to describe Nazi attempts to search out and kill Jews during the Holocaust. “Jew hunts” were especially prevalent after the liquidation of Jewish ghettos in Poland, with the Nazis seeking out any remaining Jews, of any age, who had escaped their genocidal plans.

We haven't, as yet, had the same level of pre-planned "Jew hunts" here – just the occasional sporadic outbursts of violence, plus of course the steady drumbeat of the endless "from the river to the sea" pro-Palestinian marches, with their clear antisemitic undertones. No reason to pretend it couldn't happen in the UK.

  • Andres Spokoiny at Fathom – No More Heroes: Contemporary Antisemitism and the West’s Culture of Victimhood:

There was a time, not long ago, when societies built their stories around heroes. Now, the victim has dislodged the hero as the center of society’s focus of admiration and desire. We dreamed of being heroes, now we yearn to be considered victims….

The Holocaust became, rightfully, the ultimate parameter of evil, and its casualties, the archetypical definition of the victim. Not all Jews were comfortable with that dubious honor; and while there’s a streak of victimhood in our national character, our sources eschew that notion. The stories of our oppression, like bondage in Egypt or Purim, highlight the heroic triumph. In those stories, victimhood bestows moral duties rather than rights (having been slaves is the underpinning of many ethical rules).  In fact, there’s no word for ‘victim’ in the Hebrew Bible, and modern Hebrew uses for it the word ‘korban’ (the same word used for the objects of ancient sacrifices). Regardless, after WW2, an idealised construct of evil and its victims emerged. The Nazis on one side and the Jews wearing yellow stars on the other are now shorthand for absolute evil and absolute victims. And with the advent of the ideology of victimhood, the place occupied by the Shoah and its victims became the most coveted real estate in the world.

Another major contributor to the development of the victimhood ideology is the demise of Marxism. Or rather, the realisation that class warfare wasn’t on the cards following the unprecedented material progress the working classes enjoyed in the West. Unrepentant yet perplexed Marxists wondered how, ‘if Capitalism is working better than communism for the proletariat, and if people are risking their lives to leave so-called “communist paradises”, they could keep Marxist philosophy alive and in control?’ The answer: move from class to race and gender. Blame racism and sexism on White, Patriarchal Capitalism (ignoring, of course, the fact that non-capitalist societies tend to be even more patriarchal and racist than capitalist ones).

The most salient advantage to Neo-Marxists of race and gender over class is that those categories are (for the most part) permanent. Capitalists can erode our arguments by achieving class mobility and material progress, but they can never change people’s race. A construct based on racial oppression instead of class all but guarantees an eternal state of grievance.

Post-Colonial Philosophy and Critical Race Theory then joined the party. To be sure, the process that led to the independence of former colonies was one of the most inspiring movements in history. But what we understand as today’s ‘decolonisation’ has little or nothing to do with that epic movement. If one is to believe the ‘decolonisers’ of today (who live mainly in ivory towers in the West), the decolonisation never ends. There’s always something more to decolonise. All the problems of the ‘Global South’ are the fault of ‘The West’. Because if decolonisation ended, then the former colonies would need to take responsibility for themselves, which is a much more onerous proposition than blaming the old metropolis for all their woes.

The far left’s fascination with (and exculpation of) Islamic fundamentalist violence is part of this phenomenon. The same was true of the 1970s idealisation by ‘progressive’ academics of the genocidal violence of Pol Pot. Because Muslims now have attained a high place in the Olympus of victims, one can’t blame them for the violence they commit. Because everything is allowed to the victim, and because they have the same enemies, Judith Butler can, with a straight face, call Hamas ‘a part of the Global Left,’ as though a theocratic, misogynistic, homophobic, and deeply conservative movement can be called ‘left’ of any sort. After the Charlie Hebdo massacre, and more than two hundred years after their abolition, French left-wing intellectuals demanded the return of blasphemy laws, to protect the sensitivities of Muslims. Victimhood was the alchemy that allowed that reversal. In the past, they implied, blasphemy laws protected the powerful (the Catholic Church and the king), but now their absence damage the vulnerable (the Muslims). In the victimhood ideology mentality, all the ills of the Muslim World are the West’s fault, even and especially the violence Muslims perpetrate. In fact, the greater their barbarism, the bigger our blame….

But to take hold, the ideology of victimhood had one major condition to fulfill. One without which the whole edifice would collapse. For a new aristocracy of sacralised victims to emerge, somebody had to cede their place, cease being the model of the victim, and become the archetype of the oppressor. You guessed it: the Jew….

It’s not enough to merely replace the Jew in the victimhood food chain. Because the magnitude of the crime against them was so enormous, and the complicity in its perpetration so widespread, one needs not just a replacement but a reversal. Jews cannot be replaced as the ultimate and quintessential victim unless they are transformed into the new Nazis. And to do that, Palestinians fit neatly into the role of the new Jews….

This reversal works wonders in the Western psyche. As we saw, it leaves a place for ‘more deserving’ victims, and it frees the West from its guilt. The Holocaust is an enduring indictment of the West. But if we show that, after all, Jews are ‘worse than the Nazis’, then the West wasn’t wrong in persecuting them. Everything done to the Jews was and is justified. As philosopher Vladimir Yankelevich noted ironically (way back in 1964), anti-Zionism is a blessing for Europe, ‘The only thing we, Europeans, did is simply anticipate the metamorphosis of the Jews into Nazis and tried to avoid it.’

To paraphrase the genial phrase of Israeli psychologist Zvi Rex, ‘The world will never forgive the Jews for Auschwitz.’…

Zionism is despised for something else: it runs counter to the culture of victimhood. After the Holocaust, the Jews didn’t fall into the abyss of victimisation. They took their destiny into their own hands, becoming a culture of heroes who deployed agency and empowered themselves to recreate their state in their historic homeland. That attitude is what differentiates Israel and other former colonies. The former didn’t succumb to victimist temptation and became a first-world democracy and an economic miracle, while many of the latter continue blaming their former colonial masters, remaining in a state of chronic dysfunction, wracked by corruption, underdevelopment, and poverty.

Yes to all that. Excellent article.

  • The dark side of Lebanese politics, from MEMRI TV:

Ralph Al-Shamali, head of pro-Hizbullah Lebanese Christian militia Humat Al-Diyar, said in a November 8, 2024 appearance on Lebanon On (YouTube) that he is not willing to kowtow to the Israelis because the Zionists crucified Christ. He said that the Zionists have a culture of death, while he represents a culture of life, which consists of martyrdom for the sake of truth and God. Al-Shamali continued to say that he enjoys killing the Zionists because they had crucified Jesus Christ, he added that he loves killing them and that it "relaxes" him. He criticized Hizbullah for its moral code, saying that they should be bombing Israeli schools, killing the children inside, elderly people, nuns – if there are any in Israel – and rabbis. He added that this is the only language the "bloodthirsty and barbaric enemy" understands.

Humat Al-Diyar (Protectors of the Homeland) is also the title of the Syrian national anthem. These are murky waters…

  • The latest on the troubled Pyongyang General Hospital, from the Daily NK:

Construction began on Pyongyang General Hospital in March 2020, following a special order from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The exterior of the building is complete, but the opening of the hospital has been delayed several years because of issues acquiring the necessary materials, equipment and medical devices….

The Pyongyang General Hospital, located in the Okryu No. 3 neighborhood of Pyongyang’s Taedong River District, is a signature project of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that is under the management of North Korea’s Red Cross.

Project began on the hospital on March 17, 2020, following special orders from Kim Jong Un. But as of this fall, four years and six months later, the hospital has yet to open because of the difficulty of importing medical equipment.

The exterior of the building has been completed, and planting and landscaping has been completed in garden areas on the rooftop and on the grounds of the 6.1-hectare lot. But there has been little progress on the interior of the building, and the authorities cannot afford to acquire the equipment, materials and medical devices needed to open the hospital.

Friendly countries have offered to supply the necessary medical equipment, but North Korea has appended unacceptable conditions, insisting that those countries provide the equipment gratis or send it over on the understanding that North Korea will pay the cost at some later date.

Russia could provide the missing medical equipment. During Kim’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Pyongyang in June 2024, Putin introduced Kim to Russia’s health minister and said that Russian medical equipment might be helpful in the construction of the Pyongyang General Hospital. So North Korea is probably trying to arrange for medical equipment to be shipped from Russia.

North Korea and Russia reached an agreement about medical care during the same summit. During a weeklong trip to Russia in April, two months earlier, North Korea’s health minister discussed sending North Korean medical students to Russia for training and doctors for professional development.

Great hopes were placed on the hospital at the time, as a signature project of Kim Jong Un. The official Rodong Sinmun report:

The general hospital to be built at the best place on the picturesque bank of the Taedong River is another gift of loving care which will be presented to our people by the WPK [Workers' Party of Korea] that makes a ceaseless journey of selfless and devoted efforts for our people, the best one in the world.

The venue of the ceremony was pervaded with the enthusiasm of builders for remaining loyal to the intention of the Party Central Committee to give fuller play to the advantages of the Korean-style socialism and ensure the most highly civilized and happiest life for the people by attaining radical development in the public health work.

At the moment when Supreme Leader of the Party, state and armed forces Kim Jong Un arrived at the venue of the ground-breaking ceremony, all the builders raised stormy cheers of hurrah in honor of him who has made tireless efforts with ardent loving care for the people to open a broad avenue of fresh advance of the Korean-style socialism….

Kim Jong-un's sister joined in, with her own chacteristically deranged enthusiasm:

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, has ordered the creation of a series of literary works focused on the Pyongyang General Hospital project, Daily NK has learned.

The works are expected to depict Kim Jong Un’s love for the people and the ideological fervor of Pyongyang General Hospital (PGH)’s construction workers, a source in the country told Daily NK on June 25.

“On June 20, comrade Kim Yo Jong instructed the Propaganda and Agitation Department to produce 75 volumes, including full-length and short novels and poetry collections, by the 75th anniversary of Party Foundation Day on Oct. 10,” the source said.

We've heard no more, alas, of this ambitious project.

Meanwhile a spate of accidents were reported, as construction workers fell to their deaths in the rush to get the hospital built.

So now it's the Russians to the rescue. We'll see…

  • It's one of life's great mysteries: the number of men who've committed violent crimes who then go on to transition. This latest from Reduxx is, unsurprisingly, in Canada:

The trial of a man charged with murdering his wife and two young sons has begun this week, with the accused now claiming to identify as transgender. Mohamad Al Ballouz, 38, is charged with the second-degree murder of his wife, Synthia Bussières, and the first-degree murders of their two sons, aged just 5 and 2 years old. Ballouz has now adopted the name Levana Ballouz, and has been referred to as a “woman” by Canadian press.

And now deserves our sympathy, as he struggles to live his true life in a hostile transphobic world.

Ballouz’s trial began on Monday, but during the proceedings it was learned that he now identifies as a “woman” named Levana Ballouz. During his hearings, he appeared in court wearing a blonde, curly wig and nail polish. He is reportedly representing himself after firing his two criminal defense lawyers, both of whom were considered to be among the best in Quebec.

According to CBC, the prosecution had to “warn” the jury that several witnesses would refer to Ballouz as a man to preempt any concerns about “disrespect.” Prior to the start of the trial, no previous news coverage had documented that Ballouz was expressing a change in his self-perceived “gender identity,” suggesting his claim of being transgender was extremely recent.

Canadian media outlets are respecting Ballouz’ new identity, with multiple articles covering the trial referring to Ballouz as a “woman” or by using feminine pronouns.

While the trial is expected to last at least 10 more weeks, if Ballouz is found guilty and criminally responsible, he would be entitled to request housing in a women’s prison.

Where life is considerably easier than in a man's prison. With added benefits for a sexual predator…
