Suzanne Moore in the Telegraph sums up the Greens disaster, of their own making – “The Zionism vote was final confirmation that Zack Polanski and his ilk are an authoritarian outfit controlled by hard-Leftists and Islamists”:
Those who thought that only a Burnham bounce could decimate the Greens have not been paying attention. It was inevitable that a party so high on its own narcissistic supply of self-righteousness would implode. That is the result of voting in the Soviet “Zionism is Racism” motion, which is effectively a purity test for Jews and has enabled the entire world to see the Greens’ overt racism. It’s sad but not shocking.
This year’s Green Party conference in Brighton, with its obligatory keffiyeh-wearing and performative bans on dissenting groups, was the complete opposite of the tolerant, kind and radical ethos that the Greens believe themselves to embody. The delusion is off the scale. They banned women for thinking that men are not in fact women. They banned a list of everyday words (mothers, fathers) from being uttered by members. They even banned journalists from being present at the actual vote on Israel….
Green luminaries who did not support the motion seem to be in shock about being seen as racists. But where have they been? They cannot walk this back now; they had months to rally against this motion when it came up in spring. They have had some time to confront the open entryism into their party.
Instead of local councillors trying to stop Hackney being twinned with Haifa or divesting from pension funds with any Israeli connection, they could have ensured some party discipline. So busy marinating themselves in what they believe to be progressive beliefs, but which turn out to be a noxious mix of women and Jew hate, have they failed to see what is happening to Jews in this country? These supposedly “nice” folk have not merely watched vicious, violent anti-Semitism grow, they have coaxed it along.
No other party should go into coalition with them. The progressive alliance idea – Labour’s best hope, as things stand, of remaining in power beyond the election – is surely blown. I have decent Green friends, but I don’t know quite honestly how any of them can stay in that party unless they have thrown away their own moral compasses.
From yoghurt-weaving-tree-huggers to out-and-out racists is quite the journey and many of them are bewildered. They didn’t see this coming. Nor heed the warnings. They are lost.
I hope forever.
There is still a lingering fondness for the Greens, felt by people who don’t follow the news closely, and who see them as the “decent” alternative voice to the big parties. If this doesn’t make them wise up, then I really don’t know what would…
