I was fascinated by a detail of the infamous official photos of Dame Sarah Mullally, the Archbishop of Canterbury, presenting a (now rescinded) award to Muslim cleric Hafiz Muhammad Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi. Why was his heavily shrouded unnamed wife pictured posing between them wearing his medal? Was it because the devout imam had refused to let a female archbishop put it around his neck? I emailed Lambeth Palace.
The press office replied: “Mr Ashrafi stated at the time that his wife should receive it because she had supported him in his work.”
Of course.
