A former Labour councillor had to be escorted out of a London council chamber after she was heckled and abused by trans activists.
Emina Ibrahim attended Haringey council’s cabinet meeting on Tuesday night to present a petition to the Green Party-controlled borough calling for guarantees that single-sex spaces for victims of domestic violence would be protected.
She was met outside by a group of trans rights activists, who shouted abuse as Ms Ibrahim and two others involved with the petition entered the building. The delegation later had to be escorted out of the back of the building for their own safety.
Ms Ibrahim, 50, who is a former deputy leader of Haringey council and whose mother survived domestic violence, recounted her ordeal on Wednesday, while a senior Green Party councillor took to social media to praise the pro-trans demonstrators.
Ms Ibrahim, who served as a Haringey borough councillor for 12 years, first came to Haringey in 1986, aged 10, with her sister and her mother, after they’d fled domestic violence.
On Tuesday, she came to present her petition, which urged the council to accept the Supreme Court ruling relating to single-sex spaces and guarantee that such spaces would be protected in Haringey for survivors of domestic violence.
Ms Ibrahim told The Telegraph: “There was lots of shouting. There was lots of use of the word ‘Terf’ [which stands for trans-exclusionary radical feminist]. It was clearly audible while we were inside the chamber – there were probably about 20 to 25 people outside.”
Ms Ibrahim told the council in her three-minute speech that, as a child, she had been placed in hotels with her family after they escaped domestic violence.
She said: “We were there alongside other women and girls, sharing facilities in circumstances where privacy and security were extremely limited. I remember women and girls having to stand guard at bathroom doors for one another, simply to protect our collective dignity.
“Single-sex provision isn’t an incidental feature of VAWG [violence against women and girls] services. For many women, it is an essential part of feeling safe enough to disclose what has happened to them, to rebuild trust, and to begin recovering from trauma.”
The Greens, of course, are in full support of the activists:
Tehseen Khan, a Green Party councillor and cabinet member, posted his praise for the trans activists on social media the day after the meeting.
He thanked protesters from the Dyke Project, who describe themselves as “a London-based trans and cis dyke collective fighting for trans liberation”.
In a video on X, he commended them for their “solidarity” in respect of “additional barriers that are experienced by some of our gender-diverse residents”.
The Greens are a disgrace.
