Nicole Lampert in the Telegraph spells it out – The truth about Palestinians’ eternal victimhood:
With the chest-beating pride of a footballer who has scored a hat-trick, Andy Burnham lauded himself for taking leadership “on the world stage” after standing up for “the underdog” Palestinians with his sanctions against Israel.
“We will always stand with the underdog and take what action we can to support them,” the Prime Minister proclaimed. He spoke as if a complex conflict that has lasted nearly 100 years was simply another iteration of the facile victim-versus-aggressor narrative. How depressingly stupid.
The only reason Palestinians have always been the ultimate victims is that their enemies are the Jews. As such they are granted special status never seen before in world history. In the words of writer Edward Said, they are victims of the victims.
It is demanded that we ignore that Palestinians frequently start wars and then cry when they are attacked in response. When they lose wars, unlike any others who have been defeated in history, they still demand the land they once had and the world nods its head. “We must go back to the 1967 borders!” is what we hear from our politicians. But 1967 borders weren’t enough for them then; why are we pretending they would be now?
When our Government demands that Israel must be punished for imperilling the two-state solution, the many refusals of the Palestinian leadership to agree to successive iterations of this plan are ignored.
The fact that the Palestinians were given a pseudo-state in Gaza – which could have become a peaceful haven to show the world they no longer intended to destroy the Jewish nation – and used it only to launch their latest war is deemed, somehow, not relevant.
October 7, in fact, was seen as an act of resistance rather than a declaration of war. In this screwed-up narrative, the Palestinians can’t ever be regarded as the aggressor, even when they are murdering, raping and beheading innocent civilians.
The corruption, which means vast sums of our money go straight into the pockets of crooked Palestine Authority (PA) officials in the West Bank and to pay Hamas terrorists in Gaza, isn’t mentioned.
Meanwhile, the PA is still paying for the families of imprisoned terrorists who have attacked and killed settlers in a concept known to critics as “pay for slay”. We let them do it while asking them nicely not to.
The fact that Gaza is still run by a genocidal, misogynistic, fascist Islamist terror group, while in the West Bank many would vote for Hamas if they could, is treated as if it were – at best – a minor issue. Forgive me for being cynical, but if their enemies were anyone but the Jews, I am certain we would be clearer-eyed about the danger they pose.
Meanwhile, we, the British public, might not have a working health service and our defences are on their knees but we can somehow still afford to keep bunging millions to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), the agency founded as a “temporary measure” in 1949. Its ongoing existence, more than anything else, shows how special the Palestinians are.
Every other refugee on Earth – and there are sadly millions – has to share just one agency, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHRC). No other refugees inherit refugee status, yet Palestinians do all over the world if they have a paternal link (who cares about the mothers?) to those who fled Israel in 1948.
For the Arab world, this started from the refusal to accept a Jewish state in what they believe to be a Muslim area. For them, the Jews were tolerated as mainly second-class citizens; never to be regarded truly as equals….
Treating Palestinians as nothing more than the underdog, refusing them the opportunity to pay for the consequences of their actions, keeping them as the perpetual child who, if they keep having a tantrum, may one day get the sweets they are crying out for, is, in the end, the biggest disaster of all – especially for them.
