1/ Ignore the soft focus campaigning lingo here because what Unison really want is for the protected characteristics of sex and sexual orientation to be dissolved and for the country to adopt “self ID” whereby the GR PC triggers on declaration. This is misogynist and homophobic.
2/ Starting with the misogyny. If sex becomes a matter of self declaration women loose all private spaces, single sex sports teams, the female prison estate, domestic women only violence shelters, really just any anything at all in society that says “women only”.
3/ Re homophobia, if sex no longer exists, neither does homosexuality….
4/ This is a very strange place for a union to be, particularly a union with so many female members. Gender Ideology is a bourgeois campaign far away from a union’s traditional concerns, and I look forward to what these “legal challenges” Unison has in mind actually are.
5/ My suspicion is that the crystal clarity of FWS and the guidance will see these challenges fail and that the concession that the law should change demonstrates this. Campaign by all means Unison. But be clear about what that means for women and gays/lesbians.
