Life in the exciting new Green boroughs – from the Times:
There’s a lift in an east London council block that has been broken since the Green Party swept to power in the May elections.
For three months, residents have begged the new Green regime running Hackney council to fix the lift at Newcome House but Zoë Garbett, the borough’s new mayor, and her cabinet have spent their first three months in office concentrating on bigger, bolder, non-lift-related matters
They’ve declared various plans to sue Sir Sadiq Khan over affordable housing targets; divest all of London’s local government pensions from any company remotely linked to Israel; withdraw co-operation with the Home Office over immigration raids; defy the Supreme Court over single-sex spaces; and save Gaza from destruction.
They’ve written to the mayor of Haifa in Israel demanding an end to their historic and obscure twinning partnership of which few residents were aware, and then swiftly apologised to the same mayor for setting a consultation deadline of October 7, the anniversary of the Hamas terrorist attack.
Meanwhile, the lift remains broken and the older and disabled residents of Newcome House complain they are effectively housebound.
Somehow it’s hard to shake the feeling that, well, you got what you voted for…
