At Leeds University:

Grant Shapps’s daughter has spoken about feeling unsafe as a Jewish student after witnessing “anti-Semitic” chants at her university.

Tabytha Shapps, whose father is the Defence Secretary, said she was intimidated by people marching through campus shouting “from the river to the sea” and displaying placards with the message “end Israeli state terror” in protest at the conflict in Gaza.

The 19-year-old also said she felt so uncomfortable during seminars on Israel and Palestine – in which she claimed one of her peers talked about “Israeli apartheid and Israel’s agenda as a genocidal state” – that she was compelled to drop the module.

It follows an increasing number of reports of anti-Jewish hate at UK universities in the wake of the Oct 7 atrocities, with students covering kippahs with baseball caps and hiding Star of David necklaces….

Ms Shapps said she was personally affected by a demonstration passing through the university campus on Nov 24, which she claimed “quickly escalated into anti-Semitic and anti-Zionist chants”.

Protesters were filmed shouting “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” – understood by some as a demand for the destruction of Israel.

Robin Simcox, the Government’s independent counter-extremism commissioner, has suggested he believes the chant to be genocidal in the context of the Hamas terror attacks on Israel, which killed 1,200 people.

There were also placards stating “end Israeli state terror” and “stop the war in Gaza, for a socialist intifada”.

Ms Shapps said the latter was associated with calls “for the destruction of the Jewish homeland (Israel) and its people”.

“This supposed call for ‘peace’ is therefore actually a call for terror on a campus that is home to one of the largest Jewish societies in the UK.”

"For a socialist intifada"? Led by Hamas? These people are idiots.

“Socialist intifada” does seem ridiculous. Someone is dreaming.
Left-wing demonstrators and their supporters don’t seem to understand that the days of secular socialist Arab nationalism are long gone. That ideological trend, dominant from the 1950s to the 1980s, has been eclipsed by Islamism, which is not seeking a free state of Palestine, but instead the country’s absorption into a new Muslim caliphate.
The Western leftists’ attachment to pro-Palestinian extremism is so strong that they seem unable to accept the current reality or even to perceive it.
Someone should let them know that the fight for a “democratic secular state of Palestine” that would welcome all religions no longer defines the Palestinian cause, assuming it ever really did in the first place.

I still remember the utter bewilderment of Socialist Worker colleagues when Iranian Socialists, having been allies of Khomeini in overthrowing the Shah, were then next on the victim list. Does not compute.
