The familiar complaint about bringing up the Holocaust used to be that it was "weaponised" by Jews to justify….well, to justify whatever it is that the speaker was complaining about: aggression against the Palestinians usually, or claims about pervasive antisemitism. By far the more common weaponisation of the Holocaust now, though, is what we might call the reverse weaponisation: the claim that the Holocaust is being revisited on the Palestinians; that the Israelis are the new Nazis; that there's a genocide being committed against the people of Gaza. Again and again we hear it, and each time the witless speaker asserts it as though it's some kind of profound insight. Of course it's really the most profoundly contemptuous form of antisemitism – which is why they do it. We don't hear this about the Arabs slaughtering Black Africans in Sudan, or Boko Haram massacring Christians in Nigeria – or in Ukraine, or the Uighurs, or the Syrian Arabs killed in their hundreds of thousands by Bashar Assad. It's only when Jews use force.
And here we go again. UCLA Professor of Law Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl says – or rather, shouts - that the Israelis and Americans employ the same rhetoric against the Palestinians as the Germans did against the Jews. Also that the U.S. that lied about beheaded babies and raped women remains silent facing the brutality of Israel in Gaza. Yes we've heard it all before, so many times….
From the MEMRI summary:
According to the website of the University of California, Los Angels, Dr. El Fadl is the Omar and Azmeralda Alfi Distinguished Professor of Law at the UCLA School of Law. He was also formerly the Chair of the Islamic Studies Interdepartmental Program at UCLA. He is the founder of the Institute of Advanced Usuli Studies ("The Usuli Institute"), a non-profit educational institute dedicated to ethics, beauty and critical thinking in the Islamic intellectual tradition.
"Critical thinking in the Islamic intellectual tradition". That'd be nice.
