    Where I live we grow many Sweet Chestnut trees. When they age (especially if they are pollarded) the trunk turns clockwise – as the tree in the foreground of photograph 2. It is interesting that the tree in the right-hand background has turned in the opposite direction.
    Do you know what type of trees these are?

    Oak, mostly, with possibly the odd beech. There are some big old chestnuts on the Heath, but not here.
