The UN Commission on the Status of Women is, we learn, "the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women". And they've got a tough decision to make…Iran's future on U.N. women's rights body to be decided Dec. 14.
Iran has just started a four-year term on the 45-member commission, which meets annually every March and aims to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women.
The U.S.-drafted resolution would "remove with immediate effect the Islamic Republic of Iran from the Commission on the Status of Women for the remainder of its 2022-2026 term."
It's a tough one alright. Does beating a woman to death for not wearing her hijab properly help to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women? These UN delegates certainly earn their money, having to grapple with questions like that.
