The view from Jersey City

New Jersey across the Hudson has always been something of an ugly sister to the glamour of Manhattan. Here, with the twin towers looming large over the water, is Jersey City in the late Seventies, as photographed by Andy Blair:

    Jersey City is still kind of an ugly sister to New York, I suppose, but several neighborhoods have been gentrified by now, especially a brownstone neighborhood by Grove Street. Also, there is the Pavonia-Newport Mall, there for many years, which is quite nice; and there are lots of glass office buildings near the water, near the Pavonia-Newport NJ Path train station.

    I never made it over to the Jersey shore, I’m afraid. Just looked across from the other side – and that was over ten years ago.

    I lived in Jersey City for a few years as a student, but that was longer (OK, a lot longer) than 10 years ago. JC has its affluent areas, but the cool place to be on that shore of the Hudson is Hoboken.
