Dark worlds

Photographer Josef Koudelka left his native Czechoslovakia at the time of the Soviet invasion in 1968. His book Exiles is a bleak record of his wanderings through Europe in the years immediately after:

    Thanks for these Mick. It must have been rare in those days to walk down a terrace up North without bumping into a miserabilist photographer.
    I was a fifteen-year old in Wales in 1974, and while it’s a lovely photo I don’t recall any interiors looking anything like that. Perhaps I should have got out more.

    Only dimly – I didn’t really watch sport, except very occasionally on wet Saturdays when my dad would put the wrestling on.
