Another loss, after Dobie Gray last week: Hubert Sumlin (or rather Little Hubert Sumlin), best known for his work with Howlin' Wolf. Here he is, with fellow band member Sunnyland Slim on piano, on the 1964 American Folk Blues Festival tour in Germany – with introduction by an avuncular Sonny Boy Williamson:

While we're here, here's the big man himself:

Apparently Mick Jagger and Keith Richards paid for Sumlin's funeral; which, whatever you think of the Stones, is a nice gesture.

I met Mr Sumlin briefly as a punter nearly 20 years ago at the Blackburn (Lancs) Blues Festival. When I met him again at a lunch 5 years ago at Sumperk Blues Alive Festival here in Czechia, he claimed to remember our previous meeting – a gentleman indeed. That day, I played with him at the post-show jam session. He was seriously rocking, and I got a full half-hour on stage with him until his minder whisked him away. Lifelong dream realised, one of my mainmen for ever. R.I.P.
