These children are not “reading” the Koran. They are learning to chant it phonetically. As Afghans, only a very few of them learn enough classical Arabic to understand it – essentially all they do is memorize a long stream of meaningless (to them) syllables.

Actually, it’s a blessing that they don’t understand it. Have you ever read the Koran? Even for a holy book, it is pretty violent.
