A book of Herzog's photographs has just been published:

Herzog shot in colour at a time when serious photography was only black & white. His contribution to the development of colour photography is only now beginning to be understood. Herzog himself supervises all scans, and no photograph is reprinted without it meeting his approval. 

Having browsed the book, I can certainly vouch for the quality of the prints. The colours of this photograph in Curaçao, for instance, are stunning: much better than what you see on screen.

Some bio:

He grew up in Stuttgart, but was evacuated from the city during the aerial bombardment of the Second World War. His parents died during the war (of typhoid and cancer), after which he dropped out of school and found work as a seaman on ships. He emigrated to Canada in 1952, living briefly in Toronto and Montreal before moving to Vancouver in 1953.
