It's all about Libya at the moment. Tunisia…well, excellent, but it's hardly at the centre of things. What did anyone know about Tunisia? Egypt, yes, now that really has been something: the heart of the Arab world. What that something is we don't yet know, but no one's shedding tears for Mubarak.
But Libya? Gaddafi?? Who would have expected the Libyans to have the sheer audacity and courage to challenge one of the most repressive and brutal regimes in the world?
Is Benghazi in rebel hands? Has Gaddafi already fled? Is this really the end of his 40 year rule?
While we wait for further developments, it may be a good time to remember what a ghastly Orwellian nightmare Libya has been under Gaddafi*. Michael J Totten resurrects his report of a trip there a couple of years back. Well worth a read if you missed it first time around.
*…and to forget what a shameful role the UK has played there recently. Whatever happened to principled politicians?
