Here's Zani Diabate on guitar with the Super Djata Band, from Mali. Lead singer is Daouda 'Flani' Sangaré. Recorded in Angoulême, France, in 1984. I believe this same line-up came over to London (the Forum, Kentish Town?) where I caught them – but it's all a while ago now. That was when African music looked like being the next big thing: instead of which it was consigned to the World Music shelves as a minority taste.
Worth hanging on till 2:20 or so when they get into a groove.
Somehow, especially at the beginning, they remind me of George Clinton in his early dark and swampy Funkadelic days. And how can you resist those three vocalists at the front going through their moves?
