Joan Bakewell reviews Christopher Hitchens' memoir, Hitch 22:

He has never lacked commitment, but that commitment has ranged wider than most, from the extreme Left — years with the International Socialists — to the extreme Right, as a proud defender of George W. Bush’s Iraq war.

Hmm.

Unfortunately for Bakewell, the real extreme Right, i.e. the BNP, share her view (and that of the extreme Left) that the Saddam regime should have been left alone.

It’s getting tougher to ‘defend’ Gulf War.

There was an article in yesterdays Guardian by Decca Aitkenhead on C H which to my mind reached a new low even for that rag. Here’s a few snipets to give a flavor:
I’m not sure what a legend should look like exactly,
but I’m pretty sure it’s not this. The paunchy, middle-aged figure…
he clasps one hand discreetly over the other in a manner suggestive of some practice in taming the morning shakes…
When the invasion of Iraq was first debated, one couldn’t fail to notice the preponderance of left-wing men of a certain age who came out in support of the war…
For someone feted for his adversarial prowess, I’m surprised by how often he sabotages an argument with a lurch into self-indulgence…
    etc.

Yes – a hatchet job. Hitchens really manages to get up the right people’s noses.

I see not everyone liked it. I thought it a very good review. I’ve seen Hitchens on TV arguing on endlessly when he didn’t seem to be able to win the argument on the basis of his facts.
I thought the funniest part, slipped in smoothly was: “In sum, he is now an American Jewish intellectual.”
He sure doesn’t seem it — though he brought it up himself when I saw him speak here in Toronto.
