Here (via boingboing) is an experiment demonstrating how happy psychologists get when people don't notice changes which they – the psychologists - gratuitously make to things which would never normally change. They even get to make up a name for it – change blindness – and that makes them especially pleased with themselves.
The first time we see Prof Simons he's wearing a purple shirt. Later he's wearing a blue shirt. Also, in the shelf behind him, on the right – the second one down – the copy of Evelyn Waugh's Decline and Fall is replaced in later shots by Brideshead Revisited. The plant in the reception area, at the back, is originally an aspidistra, but is later changed to a delphinium. The clock behind the counter has the numbers 8 and 9 reversed halfway through.
Very few people spot these changes, because people are, in general, stupid. It's been proved, in fact, that 75% of people are stupid. We don't know why yet, but it's probably because they were born stupid. Psychologists aren't stupid though: they're the rather smug clever ones devising experiments to demonstrate to the rest of us how stupid we are.
