For years scientists have been baffled, but at last there's been a breakthrough:

Over-eating rather than more sedentary living is almost entirely to blame for the rise in obesity in the developed world, according to research.

A study of the US obesity “epidemic” — a precursor of world dietary trends — suggests that there has not been any significant reduction in levels of exercise in the past 30 years. It concludes that the surge in obesity is a result of excessive calories.

A doctor writes:

This is a very strong, very important and long-awaited message.

It coincides pretty well with the indoctrination of the population with the belief in the merits of low-fat diets. If such diets leave you unsatisfied, you will tend then to overeat. Some explanation is needed – Americans haven’t got much better off in 30 years, so they could have afforded to overeat long ago. (My own guess is that it’s a virus – a make-you-hungry virus.)
