Check out this lot and you begin to appreciate what paragons of style and good taste Abba really were (via Metafilter).

Thanks to the miracle of YouTube it's possible to check out what some of these bands actually sounded like. This is from some circle of rock'n'roll hell that Dante could never have dreamed of.

Ah but this, this, is another level altogether. It's Lars & Gert Jonnys Band. Here are the original Gert Jonnys Band in their glorious heyday:

Now the one on the left has departed: dismissed, perhaps, for looking too normal. With what I can only describe as one of the most remarkable vocal performances I've ever heard – from his replacement Lars I presume – they're performing Forever Young. No, not the Dylan song: I believe it's their own composition. It's something special, and I recommend it for your listening pleasure.

Mick, I can’t believe you don’t know Forever Young by Alphaville?
This is a horrible rendition of that great hit. I love it.

I mean I love the original. Got a kiss or two from the ladies dancing to this song…

I suppose I should have realised they hadn’t written it themselves. Oh well.
No, never heard the Alphaville version before. For me it’ll always be Lars’ song.

Do you guys get South Park? If so, you know who this is:

It’s a tricky one, that so-bad-it’s-good schtick. Is she really taking herself seriously? Personally I’ll take Lars and the boys – the way he tries and fails to reach those notes, plus the awful portentous lyrics (sorry Fabian).

The guys in Abba actually began their career in a dance band called the Hootenannies, according to my wife who used to like them.
