Once again what's remarkable is the insouciance with which senior Muslim figures decree that anyone who disagrees with them, or whom they dislike, should be killed:

The most senior judge in Saudi Arabia has said it is permissible to kill the owners of satellite TV channels which broadcast immoral programmes.

Sheikh Salih Ibn al-Luhaydan said some "evil" entertainment programmes aired by the channels promoted debauchery.

Dozens of satellite television channels broadcast across the Middle East, where they are watched by millions of Arabs every day.

The judge made the comments on a state radio programme….

Given his position as the country's most senior judge, the sheikh's views can not be easily dismissed, says BBC Arab affairs analyst, Magdi Abdelhadi.

What would they say if the owners of satellite TV channels announced that it is ‘permissible to kill’ mad Saudi judges?

I assume that when they BBC says they can’t “easily be dismissed”, they mean they agree it’s a perfectly reasonable thing to kill the owners of the channels? I mean, it seems pretty much in line with the BBC’s view of all things Muslim.

Well no, to be fair to the BBC – and assuming you’re serious. They just mean the remarks can’t be passed off as the ravings of some fringe radical. The man’s a senior establishment figure.

‘They just mean the remarks can’t be passed off as the ravings of some fringe radical.’ Yes, but it’s still a surprisingly mild reaction. They’re not exactly throwing their hands up in horror, are they?
