A controversial Armenian newspaper editor has been assassinated in Istanbul:

Crowds of Hrant Dink’s colleagues and supporters gathered at the scene, chanting their outrage at his murder.

Dink was given a six-month suspended sentence in October 2005 after writing about the Armenian “genocide” of 1915….

Dink, the editor-in-chief of the bilingual Turkish and Armenian weekly Agos newspaper, was one of Turkey’s most prominent Armenian voices.

He was the frequent target of anger from Turkish nationalists who viewed him as a traitor, correspondents say.

More here:

NTV television said Dink was shot three times in the head and neck. Muharrem Gozutok, a restaurant owner near the newspaper, said the assailant looked about 20, wore jeans and a cap and shouted “I shot the non-Muslim” as he left the scene.

Why did the BBC put the word “genocide” in scare quotes?

Dom – that’s the BBC for you. And while I don’t know how reliable the “I shot the non-Muslim” quote is, it’s not the sort of thing the BBC would report.
The latest Beeb article – http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/6281193.stm, “Fury in Turkey at editor’s murder – manages to avoid the awkward “genocide” word, referring instead to “mass killings”.
