• Joan Smith's new book Unfortunately, She was a Nymphomaniac rescues some famous – infamous – women of ancient Rome from the gruesome tales told about them by (male) historians. The title gives a clue as those familiar old men's tales = often formulated, it's argued, in the spirit of, "oh come on, the men can't have been that bad…they obviously asked for it, these women…they were clearly sluts, nymphos" – that she's debunking. Victoria Smith has a review at The Critic – Revising Roman rottenness (a nod to Monty Python, I assume) – and makes some excellent points about its relevance today.

Unfortunately, She Was a Nymphomaniac is a timely book not least because its publication coincides with some contemporary examples of woman-hatred that also seem too extreme to be true. What is happening to women in Afghanistan at this very moment — a ban on them so much as hearing one another’s voices — feels like the kind of thing one might read about having occurred in some very distant past, whereupon one might think “well, that’s probably an exaggeration. Maybe the historians who first wrote about this just wanted to make the Taliban look bad. As if anyone would actually go that far!”. Similarly, the story of Dominique Pélicot and the fifty men who joined him to rape Gisèle Pélicot has that feeling of “just too awful to be plausible”. If this was a story about Nero or Caligula, one can easily imagine modern-day historians discussing its apparent implausibility. As if any man would be so monstrous! As if so many other men would be involved and not one — not even those who had refused the invitation to rape — would report what was happening! Yet clearly there are men like that — lots of them….

People of the past were as psychologically complex as you or I, but that doesn’t mean some of them were not cartoonishly monstrous. You only have to look at the flesh-and-blood cartoon monsters around us today.

  • It's getting towards the end of the season for the ornamental non-native trees like the maple, or the American sweetgum seen below behind the Henry Moore sculpture. The native trees though – the beeches and the oaks – are just getting into their best autumn colour.

  • From the Jerusalem Post:

In the heart of Amsterdam’s Dam Square on May 15, 2022, an ominous scene unfolded. It was Nakba Day (marking the displacement of Palestinians during Israel’s 1948 War of Independence), and the square was filled with Palestinian flags, anti-Israel banners, and chants.

At the center of this protest stood Thomas Hofland, head of the pro-Hamas Samidoun organization in the Netherlands, alongside Amin Abu-Rashid, a known Hamas operative. As speakers from the stage lauded Hamas as a “legitimate resistance movement” and even justified violence against Israelis, the Jewish community in the Netherlands took note.

This rally wasn’t a one-time incident but an alarming sign of how deeply anti-Israel sentiment has infiltrated Dutch society, from fringe activism into mainstream public spaces, social media, and even legal channels.

Today, following fresh reports of violent attacks on Israeli fans in Amsterdam, The Jerusalem Post reveals an exclusive and highly classified report from Israel’s Ministry for Diaspora Affairs and Combatting Antisemitism, written in May 2024.

The document, obtained by The Jerusalem Post, paints a disturbing picture of rising anti-Israel sentiment and antisemitism in the Netherlands. This anti-Israel agenda, as detailed in the report, spans public rallies, legal and financial networks, social media influence, and even instances of incitement.

It captures an increasingly hostile environment where anti-Israel sentiment isn’t just tolerated but, at times, is celebrated and encouraged.

The May 2022 Nakba Day protest in Dam Square was emblematic of this shift. What was once considered radical rhetoric has become normalized, not just in isolated protests but through widespread activism that permeates Dutch society….

The report outlines the scale of this shift, describing a coordinated campaign led by key figures who have embedded anti-Israel rhetoric into Dutch social and public discourse.

At the center of this movement is Amin Abu-Rashid, a well-known Hamas operative whose influence stretches into prominent Dutch circles. In May 2022, Dutch authorities raided Abu-Rashid’s home, uncovering €150,000 in cash and Hamas-related materials, a stark reminder of his financial role in pro-Hamas activities.

Hamas and its Muslim sympathisers, then – plus hard-left activists.

In May 2023, social activist Carolien Nieuweboer launched a campaign to raise €100,000 to fill public spaces with pro-Palestinian billboards across the Netherlands. These billboards display symbols reminiscent of the Palestinian flag, normalizing anti-Israel sentiment in daily public life.

By the report’s release, she had raised €83,000, illustrating strong support for these anti-Israel initiatives. Equally influential in fueling this sentiment is Rachid El Ghazaoui, known as "Rapper Appa." His social media posts are well-known for their inflammatory nature. In March 2023, he called for “military intervention” and compared Israel to Nazi Germany, suggesting that dismantling the state was the only solution. Appa’s rhetoric reflects a broader trend where social media is weaponized to amplify anti-Israel sentiment, often masked under the guise of activism or freedom of speech.

The question, as Jonathan Sacerdoti wondered: is it any better here in the UK?

  • Jonathan Sacerdoti in the Spectator – Amsterdam has failed its Jews:

Last night in Amsterdam, a scene unfolded that should send shockwaves across Europe: hundreds of Jews were hunted and beaten by mobs following a football match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ajax. Whether a spontaneous flare-up or organised assault, terrified fans were forced to jump into the city’s canals to escape violence. At least ten were injured, and three remain missing. As Israel dispatched emergency flights to evacuate its citizens, one must ask: how long until this happens in London or elsewhere in the UK?

The Netherlands must confront this issue immediately, not only for the safety of its Jewish residents and visitors but for the stability of its own society. The embassy of Israel in the US wrote that the attackers ‘proudly shared their violent acts on social media’. Who does that remind you of? The world has already witnessed this grotesque display from Hamas and Palestinian terrorists on 7 October. Now, in Amsterdam, we see echoes of the same perverse pride in brutality….

For those who say this is an isolated incident, look closer. The UK’s police forces have themselves admitted to inadequately handling the anti-Israel marches that swept through our streets. These protests, rife with anti-Semitic chants and rhetoric, were allowed to escalate unchecked under both Conservative and Labour governments. This failure isn’t just an oversight – it is a warning that we are dangerously close to allowing the same mob violence to happen here. Keir Starmer should take note: violence is not always carried out by ‘far-right’ perpetrators against pure and innocent immigrants. It is an affliction that can originate from any extremist ideology. While racist attacks against immigrants are rightly dealt with swiftly, a different standard appears to be applied when Jews are the targets.

Consider the infamous chants calling to ‘globalise the intifada’. What does that mean if not exporting violent, anti-Jewish sentiments into our own countries? The fact that such rhetoric is tolerated, even protected under the guise of free speech, speaks volumes about the selective indignation of our governments and law enforcement. This is not theoretical. When calls for ‘jihad’ were heard in London, the response from the police was not arrest but a feeble attempt at theological discourse, debating the meaning of jihad rather than addressing its real-world implications. What happened in Amsterdam is the logical conclusion of allowing such things to go unchecked.

  • Just coming up to the 86th anniversary of Kristallnacht, and here we are – Israeli football fans attacked by pro-Palestine mob in Amsterdam:

Israeli and Dutch leaders have denounced antisemitic violence in Amsterdam after Israeli football fans were attacked by pro-Palestinian rioters on Thursday night, in clashes that were likened to a “pogrom”.

At least ten supporters of the Maccabi Tel Aviv football club were injured and five hospitalised, according to press reports, after violence flared following a match with Amsterdam’s Ajax team. It came on the evening of Kristallnacht commemorations across Europe, ahead of the 86th anniversary of the notorious Nazi prosecutions.

Dutch police said 62 arrests have been made after Maccabi supporters were chased and assaulted by masked men, including attacks in a hotel.

“This seems like a planned and organised pogrom,” Naftali Bennett, a former Israeli prime minister, said this morning….

Many of the fans who were attacked said the incidents revived the trauma of the October 7 terrorist attacks by Hamas, particularly in light of the lack of protection by the authorities.

“They were waiting in groups at every corner and the moment they identified Jews they chased them,” one Israeli told the Kan News broadcaster.

“It was Kristallnacht 2,” a second told Israel’s Channel 12 news. “We’re not safe here, we’re shut inside our hotel.”…

Another supporter told the NOS state broadcaster that the attackers were Muslims.

“There were many people, Muslims, who came after us and wanted to fight us. They shouted at us, attacked us and shouted ‘Free Palestine’,” one supporter said. “The police were there and told us to hurry to our hotel. We ended up having to run.”

  • From the Sunderland Echo:

A murderer's girlfriend lay dying in his house while he attended a "building better relationships" course for assaulting her.

Stephen Todd killed Melissa Eastick with a series of beatings over several days, while already on a suspended sentence for attacking her.

He had been ordered to complete the course as part of his punishment in a bid to reduce the risk of him offending again.

But Newcastle Crown Court heard "tiny" Melissa, who was frail and vulnerable, suffered around 123 bruises and cuts, as well as multiple fractures and had six cigarette burns, likely inflicted as she was dying, at his hands.

The 36-year-old mum had also had a brain injury, which would have left her unconscious for "some days" before her death. Melissa was found dead in Todd's flat in October 17 last year.

The court heard Todd had attacked Melissa initially on October 18 2021 when he accused her of being unfaithful and punched her in the face and across her chest.

He spent time in custody for that but was released on July 10 last year, when he appeared in court and was given a 15-month sentence, suspended for two years, for assault.

Prosecutor Peter Glenser KC said Todd had been required to attend a 'building better relationships' programme as part of the sentence. Mr Glenser added: "He missed an appointment on October 10, saying he was unwell but he attended an appointment on October 12, at a time when she must have been lying injured in his flat."

The court heard Todd was noted to be "quiet and not contributing" at the October 12 meeting.

evidently the "transgender" issue meant a good deal to some voters. can't imagine why anyone feels threatened by such a small number of individuals who might otherwise be regarded sympathetically; & can only conclude that many voters were made to hate & fear by rightwing media caricaturing & demonizing them.

it's called "scapegoating"– we can see it happening to innocent persons but it is difficult if not impossible to combat when the media is so pervasive & determined.

    Some pertinent comments:

I realised you were a stupid person during your disgusting reaction to the Charlie Hebdo massacre. Nothing you've said since about women's rights contradicts my assessment. Incurious, obtuse, ignorant. [Graham Linehan]

If you genuinely can’t imagine why so many people had a problem with the transgender issue, you are the reason Dems lost.

Have you tried listening to women?
