A father who murdered his two young children has been transferred to a women’s prison after beginning to identify as transgender. Paulus Said Foukaih Abdelshahed, an Egyptian national who had been living in Sweden for almost two decades, is serving a life sentence for the killings.

After psychiatric examination it was determined that the man didn’t suffer from a serious mental disorder – so he’s now played the trans trump card.

According to TV4 Nyheterna, Abdelshahed applied to change his legal sex marker to “female” last fall, and his application was granted. He also changed his legal name to “Lily.” Shortly after, he was moved to an unnamed women’s prison. The decision to transfer Abdelshahed had caused an uproar in Sweden, with many politicians coming out to condemn the decision and demand an explanation from prison officials.

In response to the backlash, Vilhelm Grevik, the acting head of Sweden’s Prison and Probation Service, issued a press release on the case.

“The Swedish Prison and Probation Service handles thousands of placements every year, a few of which involve an inmate changing his legal gender. We follow the Prison Act, where the main rule for the Swedish Prison and Probation Service is that legal gender determines institutional placement and that people of the opposite sex should not be placed together,” Grevik wrote.
