Some people are being nasty about UNRWA – see the community notes under the aggrieved UNRWA statement below.

UNRWA supports Palestinian refugees, some 75 years after Israel's foundation – the only UN agency dedicated to helping refugees from a specific region or conflict. It was originally established to provide relief to all refugees resulting from the 1948 war, but the Israeli government took over responsibility for the Jewish refugees in 1952. No Arab country has stepped forward to take responsibility for the Arab refugees however, despite all the talk of Arab Nationalism and Arab unity. Keeping them as refugees – and the responsibility of UNRWA – is too convenient, and reinforces the point that the state of Israel, for them, can never be acknowledged. The refugees will stay refugees – now more than 5.6 million registered with UNRWA – until Israel is destroyed. 

Meanwhile in the UNRWA-run schools in Gaza the pupils are taught Jew-hatred and the glories of martyrdom.

It’s not about an UNRWA teacher who held an Israeli kid hostage in his house.
It’s all about how for 75 years you have destroyed the future of generations of Palestinians, including my family.
My cousins in Arab countries are still not citizens – not even the grandkids of the real refugees.
My cousins in Lebanon are not even allowed to work in certain jobs.
And my friends in Gaza and the West Bank continue to be victims of incitement in their own schools.

And it’s all your fault.
Shut UNRWA down.
