I remember, years back, stopping off at a Chinese restaurant in a small town somewhere north of Glasgow and thinking: this is by some margin the most depressing restaurant I've ever been in. These places in France may not be quite that bad, but they do exude a certain air of desolation.

Funnily enough the best Indonesian food I ever had in Europe was in a restaurant St Malo run by a French bloke, his Indonesian wife & brother-in-law. Similarly, I once had an excellent Thai meal in Barrow-in-Furness, so you just never can tell.
