You will have been hard-pushed recently to avoid reading about student Robbie Travers and his travails with Edinburgh University over his supposed hate crime of mocking ISIS on Facebook. This Mail headline is typical of the coverage – Edinburgh University law student, 21, who mocked ISIS on Facebook is probed by college bosses over it being a HATE crime that 'puts minority students at risk'.
Luckily there are a few journalists who still take their responsibilities seriously. Nick Cohen looks behind the headlines: Many news organisations published Robbie Travers’ claims to have been victim of a PC stitch-up. If only they had dug a little deeper into the murky racial politics behind the story.
