Another small blow to the wishful thinkers for whom new Iranian President Rouhani is ushering in an age of goodwill, understanding and peace in our time. As Stephan Haggard relates, it seems that a delegation from North Korea was in Tehran for Rouhani's inauguration, and headed off to meet Mohammad Ali Jafari, head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). They were concerned that Rouhani's friendly overtures to the West might signal the end to their fruitful relationship. Not at all, said the IRGC man: responsibility for the missile and nuclear cooperation between the two states was nothing to do with the President but was entirely under the control of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. So…business as usual.
