James Dawson, North Shields Police Station, 9th June 1902:

The vintage photography website Shorpy takes a break from its usual American subjects for a visit to the collection of the North Shields Police Court 1902-1916 held at Tyne & Wear Archives and Museums.

I see that the Archives are happy to receive family history enquiries. One hopes there haven't been too many responses along the lines of, "Dear Mr Dawson, with regard to your request, we can report that the news is somewhat mixed. The good news is that, yes, we've finally managed to trace your great-grandfather…."

Actually, exposure in this picture is pretty decent, all things considered. The face is under-lighted a bit, otherwise it’s quite good.

Didn’t people dress well then, despite the poverty. That’s presumably what he had on when taken in.
