Some post titles just draw you in.

Gloomy Atmosphere of some Russian Seaports.

Irresistible. It's a photo gallery of some closed towns on the Kola Peninsula in Russia's far north, above Murmansk and well into the Arctic Circle. For those moments when you might think your life circumstances are grim.

They're all naval towns. Polyarny, for instance, is home to a number of nuclear-powered submarines. Here's downtown:

Polyarny-46

Polyarny-48

Though for six months a year – a blessing perhaps – you can't see it.

Actually, living here is rather difficult. Darkness lasts during half a year. Diseases of the eyes are the most frequent here. Lack of vitamin D. Depression. And all this is because of lack of light. Most residents install fluorescent lamps along their windows as an imitation of the sun light. Otherwise one can easily go mad.

And the cold. Don't forget the cold.

On the other hand:

In a presidential decree dated May 5, 2008, the town of Polyarny was awarded the title of the City of Military Glory.
