It's a shame that all we hear in South Africa – surely one of the world's great musical cultures - are those bloody vuvuzelas. Only Jamaica can boast bass lines as powerful. If Brenda Fassie had still been around (she died in 2004 age 39) she'd have torn the place up at the World Cup opening ceremony. Here she is singing to an audience that includes Nelson Mandela:

Then of course there's Mbube – "The lion sleeps tonight" – the most famous song ever to come out of South Africa.
