Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir was charged by the International Criminal Court last year with crimes against humanity and war crimes for his government's actions in Darfur. A charge of genocide was not pursued on the grounds that there was insufficient evidence, but last month an appeals chamber ordered that evidence which could support a genocide indictment should be looked at again after being discarded during earlier hearings.

Is Bashir worried? No, he is not:

"The International Court of Justice (ICC) has done me a favor which I would never have dreamt of. My popularity in my home country has unexpectedly multiplied through this arrest warrant," Al-Bashir told Spiegel news magazine….

"From the start, it was a conspiracy orchestrated from abroad that politically, militarily and financially supported the rebellion in Darfur," Bashir said.

He also said US "inconsistencies" with regard to Sudan could only be explained because "powerful interest groups influence the US government."

Powerful interest groups? Whatever can he mean?
