It'd be interesting to get some informed commentary on this:

A group of scientists have unveiled what they say is the most comprehensive study ever of African genes.

Published following a decade of study, the researchers say their findings give new insight into the origins of humans.

The first humans probably evolved near the South Africa-Namibia border before migrating north, the study says.

I thought all the indications were that the Great Rift Valley, in East Africa, was the cradle of humanity. At least that's where most of the famous fossils, like Lucy, have been found. Maybe that's simply because fossils are better preserved there.

P’raps they mean the first hom. sap., rather than “hominids” or whatever the jargon now is.

Exactly. Without silt and water (clay) there’s not much chance of an individual being preserved in any way; add carnivores to the equation and you’ve better luck with the lottery.
