With all the hype about the new Hadrian exhibition, it’d be a shame if another British Museum exhibition got overlooked – The American Scene: Prints from Hopper to Pollock. It’ll cost you £12 less to get in (ie it’s free), and you won’t have to queue, or push your way through crowds. The BM website has a few tasters:

A Stag at Sharkey’s – George Bellows

Spring Night and Little Penthouse – Martin Lewis

Psychopathic Ward – Robert Riggs

I even took a couple of photos myself (they don’t seem to mind, provided you switch off the flash). Here’s Thomas Hart Benson’s evocative “The Race”:

And this extraordinary surreal piece, “Entrapped”, by John Ward McClellan:

Modernism in the best sense.

Well that’s all very well, but I do expect to see evidence of whether cheese, bacon or chocolate was used.

I collect etchings by E.C. Rost. There used to be a site (ernestrost.org) that showcased many of his etchings, but now the site says it was “inadvertantly deleted.” He liked old roads by rivers with run-down cabins and barns. I don’t know if it is your style, but here are some etchings on ebay.

Those Hopper’s are interesting, a little bit different from the paintings he’s famous for, but, the couple on the El train. That’s just perfect, isn’t it? I had a chance to see the Hopper exhibit at the Boston MFA about a year or so ago and it was just so…so…so…Hopper! Anyway, I liked it.
