    I saw a blog comment the other day where an American referred to “petrol”. I suspect it was because he also needed to refer to (natural) gas, compressed gas, and hydrogen gas. Another commenter didn’t like it though.

    I remember doing that in the 1960’s in the West Highlands.
    It was six strokes of the pump to a gallon, iirc; there was no meter.
    That gallon would have cost somewhere around four shillings (about 20p to you youngsters, and remember a gallon is just over four litres). That was expensive, because we were in such a remote area.
    Happy days.
